Baseball Drops Series Finale to WCU

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team rallied late with five runs over the final three innings, but it was not enough to overcome the five homers of Western Carolina Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field as the Catamounts claimed an 8-5 win. Wofford falls to 28-13 (8-6 SoCon) with the loss as Western Carolina takes the series and improves to 23-18 (8-7 SoCon).

Alec Bouchard (0-3) suffered the loss for Wofford in a starting role. The freshman tossed 3.0 innings with three runs allowed on four hits. He issued no walks and struck out a career-high six batters, including each of the first four he faced. Mike Eggert pitched 1.1 innings out of the bullpen with two runs surrendered on two hits and a walk. Kenny Michaels hurled the final 4.2 innings with three runs allowed on four hits and one walk. The southpaw also fanned six batters.

Catamount starter Davis Budd (2-1) picked up the win after pitching 6.2 innings with one run allowed on two hits and two walks.

Brice Martinez tallied the only multi-hit effort by a Terrier with his two hits. He was also hit by a pitch to reach three total times. Marshall Toole and Daniel Jackson each drove home two runs with their hits. Toole's was a single to extend his on-base streak to 41 games, tying Ryan Galanie's mark between 2022-23 for the longest by a Terrier since 1999. Jackson's lone hit was a two-run long ball, his seventh of the season. Ryan Wynn drove in the other Wofford run with his pinch-hit single. Though hitless, Adam Haber reached base twice by drawing a pair of walks.

Jack Renwick notched a hit and scored a run in the game. That run was the 180th of his career, tying him with Lawson Hill for most all-time in Wofford history. One more run scored will grant Renwick sole possession of another Terrier record, as the senior already owns the program's stolen base record (90).

The Catamounts started the game in control, hitting four home runs over the first six innings of the contest to claim a 6-0 lead entering the seventh. The Terriers had been held in check up to that point with just two hits.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Wofford finally got on the board. After the first two batters were put out, Adam Haber drew a walk, and Jack Renwick single up the middle. Marshall Toole then came up clutch by rocketing a single back up the middle to score both runners, cutting the score to 6-2.

However, the long ball bit the Terriers again in the top of the eighth. The Catamounts got both runs back with a two-run homer to make the score 8-2.

But the Terriers continued their comeback push. Brice Martinez led the bottom of the frame off with a single, and Daniel Jackson went deep himself with a no-doubter to left. David Wiley singled and advanced to second on a groundout, and Ryan Wynn stepped up to pinch-hit. The freshman wasted no time, sending the first pitch he saw back up the middle to drive in Wiley and limit the margin to 8-5.

Kenny Michaels put Western Carolina down in order in the top of the ninth to hand the baton back to his offense for the final push. The Terriers put the ball in play in their attempts to battle back, but all three batters flew out to seal an 8-5 defeat to Western Carolina.

Wofford will look to bounce back with a home midweek tilt on Wednesday, May 1, against Winthrop. First pitch against the Eagles at Russell C. King Field is set for 5:30 p.m. with the contest set to be streamed on ESPN+.
