Baseball Downs Elon 15-9 After Late Surge

Jack Renwick knocks 200th hit against former SoCon foe

ELON, N.C. – Down 5-1 going into the fifth inning, the Wofford baseball team began to rally with 13 runs over the following three frames to ultimately topple Elon 15-9 Wednesday night at Latham Park. Wofford improves to 19-8 on the season with Elon dropping to 11-17.

Mason Compton (2-2) secured the win in relief for Wofford after tossing the final 5.0 innings of the contest, a new career high for the freshman. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits but did not walk a batter and struck out a career-best three hitters. Freshman Kenny Michaels made his first-career start, pitching only the first inning with a pair of punchouts and no runs allowed. Dylan Rhadans and Branton Little bridged the three innings between the freshmen hurlers, with Little tossing 2.2 innings and allowing just one run, unearned, with two strikeouts.

Phoenix reliever Cristo Garrelts (1-2) suffered the loss after giving up five runs on one hit and two walks with a pair of hit batsmen. He only tossed one-third of an inning.

Wofford's 10 hits were dispersed among six hitters, three of whom tallied multiple. Marshall Toole led the way with three, his second three-hit contest in as many days. Three was his magic number as the junior scored three runs, drove home three runs and tallied a triple as his lone extra-base knock. Toole also swiped two bases, bringing his season total to 24 to tie Oakland's Trent Rice for the national lead.

Brice Martinez added two hits with two RBI, and Jack Renwick tallied a pair of hits with one run driven in. Those hits were enough for Renwick to reach the coveted 200 career hits milestone, making him the 14th Terrier all-time to join the club. Renwick also added two stolen bases, moving his season total to 10. Daniel Jackson and Tyler Hare recorded just one hit each with both driving home two runs.

The Terrier offense put forth a balanced attack on the night, drawing five walks and getting hit five times with a pitch. Those combined 10 free passes equal the number of base hits Wofford batters recorded.

Elon threatened to strike first by loading the bases in the bottom of the first inning, but Kenny Michaels clamped down on the mound, notching a strikeout for the third out to keep the game scoreless. Wofford rewarded him by putting the first run on the board in the second. After a Phoenix error placed a runner on second, Tyler Hare roped a double into the outfield gap to provide Wofford a 1-0 lead.

However, the Phoenix broke through with their own response in the bottom of the frame with five runs. A two-run homer was later followed by back-to-back singles that drove home three runs in total. Elon held a 5-1 advantage.

Wofford got one of those runs back in the top of the third. Marshall Toole lined a triple off the wall in left center, and Dixon Black's single up the middle brought Toole in to cut the score to 5-2.

With three runs in the fifth, Wofford pulled back to even with Elon. A sacrifice fly by Andrew Mannelly opened the scoring, and Brice Martinez doubled home a run to pull Wofford within one. A wild pitch would later score Black, tying the game at five.

But the Phoenix reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run scoring via an error, pulling back in front 6-5.

But with seven runs in the top of the sixth, the Terriers found a rhythm to not just retake the lead but also blow the game open. Toole singled home a pair before a bases-loaded walk by Mannelly brought in another. Martinez delivered an RBI infield single before Daniel Jackson roped one into right that plated two more. Tyler Hare drove in the seventh run with his RBI fielder's choice, giving Wofford a 12-6 lead.

Elon again got one run back in the bottom of the frame, this time using an RBI single through the left side to pull within 12-7.

The Wofford offense continued to roll with three more runs in the top of the seventh. Jack Renwick notched his 200th career hit, an RBI single, to kick off the scoring. Toole followed with his own RBI single, and Mannelly lifted his second sacrifice fly of the night to make the score 15-7 for the Terriers.

Elon tripled home two runs in the eighth to cut the score to 15-9, but that is where it stood. Mason Compton held firm on the bump in the ninth to ice the contest in Wofford's favor, capping the road swing on a good note.

After six games on the road, Wofford returns to the friendly confines of Russell C. King Field this weekend to host UNCG in a SoCon series. Game one against the Spartans is currently scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday evening with games two and three to follow over the weekend. All three contests are set to be streamed on ESPN+.
