CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team wasted no time Tuesday night, depositing nine runs in the first inning at the PC Baseball Complex en route to a 19-2 run-rule triumph over Presbyterian. The Terriers improve to 31-15 with the win as the Blue Hose drop to 25-23.
Champ Davis (1-0) collected his first-career win in relief for the Terriers, tossing a career-high 5.0 innings with only one run allowed on four hits and a walk. Davis tallied three strikeouts.
Dom Marcoccio started, tossing the first inning and allowing a run on one hit and two walks. After Davis worked,
Holden Wilder made his season debut and locked down the final frame, facing four batters and allowing just a walk with a strikeout to notch the final out.
"It's never easy coming down here in a midweek. [Presbyterian] is a good team, and it's a tough environment, so it's just about battling every pitch," said Davis of his outing. "Just taking it pitch-by-pitch, tying to execute what's called, and it turned out well. I had a really good defense behind me, and obviously the offense showed out, which is always great."
Presbyterian starter Jeffrey Hays (0-5) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs (five earned) on seven hits in just two-thirds of an inning.
The Wofford offense collected 17 total hits, the 25
th game this season with double-digit base knocks.
Marshall Toole led the way with his third-career four-hit game, and he added a walk to reach base safely five times. Toole added in three RBI.
Daniel Jackson and
Jack Renwick both tallied three-hit efforts with each working a walk. Jackson drove home two runs. Renwick's hits give him 226 in his career, tying him with Konstantine Diamaduros for ninth all-time in program history.
Dixon Black and
David Wiley collected a pair of hits each, with Black bringing home three runs and Wiley driving in one. Two of Black's RBI came on his two-run homer, the ninth long ball for him on the season.
Brice Martinez notched one hit and an RBI, and that base knock, a single in the first, was the 200
th of his career. He is the 15
th Terrier all-time to reach the 200 hits milestone.
Tyler Hare, like Black, added a homer, his team-leading 13
th of the season. It was his only hit, but he totaled three runs driven in.
Adam Haber also picked up a hit and RBI. Though hitless,
Ryan Wynn added an RBI with a sacrifice fly in his first-career start at designated hitter.
On the basepaths, the Terriers swiped three bases. Martinez, Haber and
Aaron Thomas each picked up a steal.
Wofford opened the contest with the gas pedal pressed down, plating nine runs and batting around with 12 total batters in the top of the first. The first four batters singled, with
Brice Martinez and
Daniel Jackson driving in one run and two runs, respectively.
Tyler Hare then added a two-run home run that traveled 397 feet to left center to continue the onslaught. Later in the frame,
Marshall Toole doubled into the right field corner for his second hit of the frame, driving in two runs.
Dixon Black then added a second hit of his own, clubbing a two-run blast to left center, also a 397-footer, to give Wofford its initial 9-0 advantage.
The Blue Hose got one run back in the bottom of the first with a solo home run, but the Terriers remained on top 9-1.
The Terriers continued to add runs in the top of the second with three more coming across the plate.
Ryan Wynn lifted a sacrifice fly to open the scoring in the frame, and a hit batsman and a walk would load the bases for Toole with two outs. The junior lefty placed down a clutch squeeze bunt in the right spot where Presbyterian could not make a play, allowing two runners to race home and make the Terrier lead 12-1.
Three more runs scored in the top of the third for Wofford. With the bases loaded,
David Wiley found space in the infield, singling home a run. Two more would later score on
Adam Haber's infield single, a play that also featured a throwing error sailing over the catcher's head. Wofford pushed its advantage to 15-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Terriers tacked on three more in the top of the sixth. A walk and back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Black, who was hit by a pitch to bring in a run. A wild pitch then plated one more. A walk would reload the bases, and Hare's fielder's choice pushed across the third score. The margin increased to 18-1.
Presbyterian ended its streak of scoreless innings with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 18-2.
In the top of the seventh, a passed ball by the Presbyterian catcher allowed another Terrier to score as the lead ballooned to 19-2.
Holden Wilder came on to pitch the seventh, and in his season debut the senior stifled the Blue Hose to secure the 19-2 victory for Wofford in seven innings.
With Wofford's final non-conference and midweek game in the books, sights are now set solely on Southern Conference action. The Terriers welcome ETSU to Russell C. King Field this weekend for a three-game series, the final home contests for Wofford. First pitch for game one is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10. Games two and three will follow on Saturday and Sunday with the series finale scheduled to be senior day.
