Spartanburg, S.C. – In their first match of the 2024 season, the Wofford women's soccer team fell 3-2 in a back-and-forth battle against Presbyterian on Thursday night at Snyder Field.
The Terriers jumped on the board 1-0 on a goal from
Millie Murphy, who sunk a shot in the back right pocket off a remarkable assist from
Caileen Almeida. The Blue Hose would march right down the pitch with a quick answer to tie it at one-all in the 21
st minute.
Wofford tightened up on the defensive end, only allowing one more shot on goal for the remainder of the half. The Terriers kept the pressure on the Blue Hose defense but could not score another goal despite
Kate Markey and
Charlotte Simas threatening late in the half.
The Terriers came out of the break with a quick goal from
Millie Murphy, her second of the night.
Ellie Gower would tally the assist in the 54
th minute to give Wofford a 2-1 lead.
Rylee Godbold turned away two Blue Hose shots, but Presbyterian found the back of the net in the 66
th minute to tie the match 2-2. Just two minutes later, Presbyterian registered another goal to take a 3-2 lead in the 68
th minute.
Wofford managed to send off four more shots, but none would connect.
Megan Childress gave the Terriers their best chance to tie the game in the 83
rd minute behind a shot that was just outside the right crossbar. The team would go on to lose the match 3-2.
The Blue Hose gained the edge versus Wofford in shots, registering 13 compared to the Terriers' eight. The team was able to hold Presbyterian to only six shots on goal, however, while tallying four of their own.
Rylee Godbold totaled three saves on the night while Presbyterian finished with two. The Blue Hose were able to find four corner kicks with Wofford taking three.
The Terriers will look to bounce back at home on Sunday, August 18, with a matchup versus Stetson University set for 1:00 PM.
