BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The Wofford men's basketball team (11-10, 5-3) fell on the road to the Samford Bulldogs (17-4, 7-1) 77-61 at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday evening.
The Terriers were outshot tonight, as Samford shot 52.8 percent (28-53) from the field and hit 11 three-pointers at a 50 percent clip. Wofford finished the game shooting 44 percent (22-50) and made six deep balls.
Wofford was led by four double-digit scorers with
Corey Tripp posting 15 points to lead the team.
Jeremy Lorenz followed behind at 14 points along with
Kyler Filewich and
Dillon Bailey scoring 12 points each. The team finished with 10 assists on 22 made baskets.
Kyler Filewich and
Luke Flynn paced the team with three helpers apiece.
Samford won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Terriers 33-27. Wofford was led by eight rebounds from
Kyler Filewich along with four each from
Justin Bailey and
Jackson Sivills. The team outscored Samford in the paint, though, tallying 30 points to Samford's 26.
Wofford won the turnover margin, forcing 12 Bulldog turnovers while committing 10.
Kyler Filewich and
Dillon Bailey led the team with two swipers each. Filewich also recorded two blocks on the night, as well as
Justin Bailey and
Jackson Sivills finishing with one apiece.
Corey Tripp got the scoring started for both squads, as the senior guard buried a triple on the team's first possession. Samford responded with seven-straight points, but
Kyler Filewich put a halt to the run with a big-time jam. A layup by
Dillon Bailey followed by another Filewich dunk handed the Terriers the lead again at 9-7 with 14:34 left in the first frame.
Back-to-back triples from the Bulldogs kickstarted a 9-0 run from Samford as the lead switched hands once again. The nine unanswered points were the start of a 20-4 run that resulted in a 12-point advantage in favor of Samford with just under five minutes remaining. The Terriers would head into the break trailing 42-26.
Samford opened the second stanza with a make at the free throw line, but Wofford would score seven-straight points to cut the lead to 10 with 17:03 left in the contest. The Bulldogs responded, however, rattling off a 16-1 run over the next five minutes of game time. The Terriers could not overcome the 25-point deficit, losing the game 77-61.
Wofford will be back in action on Wednesday, January 29, as the team will take on VMI at 7:00 p.m. inside of Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The game can be streamed on ESPN+
