SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College football head coach
Shawn Watson has announced that Brandon Napoleon and Dustin Royston have joined the coaching staff. Napoleon will work with the cornerbacks, while Royston will work with the outside linebackers and serve as special teams coordinator.

Shawn Watson. "They both come to us with a great amount of experience and are great recruiters. Brandon has coached defensive backs at a high level, most recently at Jacksonville State. Dustin comes to us from Murray State and had spent seven years previously at Middle Tennessee. He had a lot of experience coordinating special teams there, and we're excited to have him coordinate that unit."
Brandon Napoleon was on the staff of Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State in 2024. The team was 9-5 overall and 7-1 in Conference USA. They won the league championship with a 52-12 win over Western Kentucky. They were selected to play in the StaffDNA Cure Bowl against Ohio University. Defensive back Zechariah Porter was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
Napoleon joined the Gamecocks from Rhode Island, where he served as the Rams' defensive backs coach in 2023. His unit at URI was led by cornerback Syeed Gibbs, who was named the 2023 CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year and an FCS Freshman All-American by numerous outlets, and All-CAA safety Brent Jackson.
He joined the Rams' staff from Sacred Heart, where he was the cornerbacks coach in 2022 and was on a staff that boasted the fourth-best pass defense in FCS. His unit included All-NEC corner Arsheen Jiles, who led the conference in pass break-ups.
Prior to Sacred Heart, Napoleon was a graduate assistant at Buffalo and also served stints at Kutztown University, Geneva College, Midwestern State and Susquehanna.
During his time at Susquehanna, Napoloen coached two-time All-American Daniel Shelton and led the River Hawks to a 10-1 record and a Centennial-MAC Bowl win in 2019.
A native of Rahway, N.J., where he was played in the U.S. Marines All-American Bowl, Napoleon signed with West Virginia and played for the Mountaineers before finishing his career at Kansas Wesleyan. He earned his degree in communications from Kansas Wesleyan in 2018.
Dustin Royston was the linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator at Murray State University.
Royston was on the staff at Middle Tennessee for seven seasons, competing in four different bowl games. In 2022, he worked with the linebackers and added special teams coordinator duties in 2023. Sam Brumfield was named second team All-CUSA in 2023 after leading the team in tackles. From 2018-21 he was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. In 2021 the Blue Raider defense led the nation in turnovers gained (32) and defensive touchdowns (6). Jordan Ferguson was a second team all-conference pick in 2021, while in 2018 three players had honorable mention All-CUSA recognition. During the 2017 season he was a graduate assistant with the Blue Raiders, with a focus on the defensive front.
He spent two seasons in an off-field role at the University of Alabama, working with the outside linebackers and defensive ends. In 2015, the total defense was third in the nation as the team was SEC champions, Cotton Bowl champions, and national champions. In 2016 the total defense was first in the nation and the team won the SEC championship and the Peach Bowl before falling in the national title game. He worked with NFL draft picks Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, Christian Miller, Jamey Mosley, Terrell Lewis, and Anfernee Jennings.
A native of Royston, Georgia, he played at the University of Georgia as a fullback and on special teams. He earned degrees in international affairs and political science from Georgia in 2012. In 2025 he added a masters in education from Lipscomb University.
