DeLand, FL. - The Wofford softball team (7-3) finished the final game of the Hatter Classic with a 3-0 win over Fairfield at Patricia Wilson Field. The Terriers were led by pitcher Margaret Axelson and an early offensive outburst to coast to the 3-0 victory.
Junior Margaret Axelson started for the Terriers and turned in another excellent performance, with a complete game shutout on only two hits given up and four strikeouts. This is her fourth complete game of the season which leads the Southern Conference and has shaved her ERA down to an astonishing 0.50 this year.
The Terrier offense jumped on the Fairfield starter early, scoring three runs in the first inning. A Hope Ingle RBI double scored Kate Platte, then an Abernathy fielder's choice scored Rivers Sampson. Finally, a throwing error by the Fairfield catcher scored Ingle. The Terrier offense would threaten throughout the game leaving five runners on base but would not be able to score. But this was all the run support Axelson needed as she shut down the Stags offense which led to the 3-0 victory for the Terriers. With this victory Wofford has solidified second place in the Hatter Classic behind Stetson.
Wofford will return to action Wednesday, February 19, to play Presbyterian College at Hope Field. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
