Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford softball (9-3) earned a pair of wins behind two strong pitching performances over Colgate (1-6) and North Carolina A&T (2-6) Friday at Hope Field. This is the Terriers' eighth straight win at home, the most in program history. Â
Game 1 Â
The Wofford Terriers defeated the Colgate Raiders 3-1 behind a strong pitching effort by Abby Greenwood and Natalya Salo. Sophomore Abby Greenwood got into the circle to start the game and picked up right where she left off from the Hatter Classic. She went six and two thirds with six strikeouts on her way to earn the win, improving her record to 2-3 in five appearances this season.Â
The Terriers struck quickly with a Brianna Stanley RBI single in the first and in the third with a two RBI double by Havalynn Abernathy. Â However, the Wofford bats cooled off, stranding four runners on base the rest of the game. Colgate would threaten throughout the game, none more so than in the seventh with a bases loaded single to score a run to make the score 3-1. With the bases loaded, head coach Butler sent in freshman Natalya Salo to close out the game. The freshman right-hander got the final out of the game with the bases juiced to earn a save and a Wofford victory with a 3-1 final score. Â
Game 2 Â
Game two saw the Terriers outlast North Carolina A&T 6-4 with an early Wofford offensive onslaught. Margaret Axelson got the nod for game two and received the win after going four and two thirds on three strikeouts with four runs given up. Â The Terrier bats got hot early with a Gracie Parker RBI single. North Carolina A&T responded with an RBI single of their own to knot up the score 1-1. Rivers Sampson would again extend Wofford's lead with an RBI single to make it 2-1 after the second frame. Again North Carolina A&T would answer to tie up the score 2-2 in the third. In the bottom of the third, the Terriers would break through with a Kate Platte RBI single and a Rivers Sampson three RBI triple to extend Wofford's lead 6-2. North Carolina A&T would score two runs in the fifth inning to knock Margaret Axelson out of the game. The Terriers turned to Natalya Salo to close out the game, and the freshman delivered, going two and a third innings and striking out five of the last seven batters she faced to earn Wofford the 6-4 win over the Aggies. Â
Wofford will return to action tomorrow, February 22, as they take on South Carolina State at 1:30 pm and the preseason ASUN favorites in Eastern Kentucky at 4:00 pm at Hope Field. Â
