Wofford Ends Sparkle City Invite With Two Wins

Spartanburg, S.C- The Wofford softball team (11-3) won games against South Carolina State (4-5) and Eastern Kentucky (8-4) to close out the Sparkle City Invite with a 4-0 record on Saturday at Hope Field.

Game 1

The Wofford Terriers defeated the South Carolina State Bulldogs 3-2 behind another remarkable pitching performance by freshman Natalya Salo. Salo got the start, her third outing in the last three games, and put together a complete game with a program record 10 strikeouts. The freshman right hander gave up two runs on six hits with no walks on her way to the win. The Bulldogs struck first with a solo shot in the second inning, but the Terriers responded in the third. Kate Platte would drive in an RBI with a single and then Kaytlin Greenwood would steal home on an errant throw from the catcher to second base putting Wofford up 2-1. The game was quiet until the seventh frame when South Carolina State tied it up on a bases loaded single. The Terriers would create an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh as they had the bases loaded for senior Hope Ingle. Ingle hit a sharp line-drive through the right side of the infield to win the game 3-2 for the Terriers.

Game 2

Game two saw the Terriers win a nailbiter against the preseason ASUN favorite Eastern Kentucky by a 4-2 margin. Margaret Axelson got the circle against the Colonels and pitched a complete game with two runs on seven hits with no walks allowed. This was Axelson's fifth complete game of the season, ranking her second in the nation in that statistic. The Terriers took control of the game early with an Olivia Lenzen fielder's choice RBI and an Abbi Campbell fielder's choice RBI to put Wofford up 2-0 in the second frame. EKU would respond in the third inning with a two RBI double, however that would be the only blemish on Axelson's day, and she would not surrender another run. The Terriers would take the lead in the fifth frame with a Hope Ingle RBI single with two outs. They added an insurance run in the sixth with a Kate Platte single which scored pinch runner Desirae Devine. Axelson would close the seventh inning with a one-two-three final frame to confirm Wofford's 4-2 victory. This was Head Coach Chelsea Butler's first win against her alma mater.

Wofford will return to action Tuesday, February 25, to play Northern Iowa at Hope Field. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
