CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team (16-14, 10-7) took down the Western Carolina Catamounts (8-20, 4-13) 90-67 on Wednesday night at the Ramsey Center. The Terriers scored 90 points in the win which is the most by the team against a Division I opponent this season.
"I was really proud of our guys' effort, mentality, and unselfishness," said head coach
Dwight Perry. "A lot of credit goes to our program for having the resolve to reset after a tough loss on Saturday. Western Carolina was really confident and came into the game playing its best basketball of the year. Our guys did a really good job of setting the tone early in the first half."
Kyler Filewich finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists as the big man secured his 10
th double-double of the season. Filewich has now set the new Wofford men's basketball single-season record for the most double-doubles in a season during the Division I era. He surpasses Lee Skinner who notched nine during the 2013-14 season.
"It's a cool accomplishment for sure," said
Kyler Filewich. "I've had a lot of help from the other guys on the team. It shows up as my double-doubles, but it's a team effort from everyone."
Wofford finished the game shooting 47.1 percent (33-70) from the field and hit eight threes. Western Carolina shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field and made eight threes as well. The Terriers totaled 15 assists with
Kyler Filewich pacing the team at five.
Jeremy Lorenz followed behind with three.
Five Terriers finished in double-digits as the team cruised to its fifth-straight road win.
Justin Bailey scored a team-high 18 points and hit six free throws while
Corey Tripp followed behind with 15 points.
Jeremy Lorenz chipped in 14 points off the bench, and
Kyler Filewich tallied 13 points.
Dillon Bailey rounded out the five double-digit scorers with 12 points.
The bench played a huge role in the win, scoring 25 points compared to nine by the Catamounts. Lorenz's 14 points led the efforts from the bench.
Kahmare Holmes added eight points along with three from
Luke Flynn.
Wofford dominated the boards, outrebounding Western Carolina 45-33 including 17 offensive rebounds. Filewich led the group with 11 rebounds while
Jeremy Lorenz pulled down seven.
Corey Tripp recorded six boards along with five each from
Justin Bailey and
Luke Flynn. The team tallied 18 second chance points.
The Terriers also claimed the edge on the turnover margin, forcing the Catamounts into 13 turnovers that resulted in nine steals for Wofford.
Dillon Bailey and
Kahmare Holmes paced the team with two steals each. The team totaled 12 points off those turnovers.
Jeremy Lorenz also recorded two blocks while
Luke Flynn swatted one shot away.
Western Carolina got on the board first, but a floater from
Justin Bailey evened the game out early. Despite the answer from Bailey, the Catamounts would fire off an 8-2 run to start the game and held a lead for the first six minutes of the contest.
Corey Tripp would rattle off five-straight points to give Wofford a 13-11 lead with 13:00 left in the half.
The teams would trade leads over the next several minutes, but it was Wofford gaining a six-point advantage with just under seven minutes remaining in the first stanza. The Terriers used a 16-5 run over the remainder of the half to give the team its largest lead of the game, 44-29. Wofford would head into the break with a 46-31 lead.
Western Carolina opened the second half with a three, however, Wofford responded with a 10-1 run to take a 22-point lead early in the last stanza. A three-pointer by
Jackson Sivills along with a pair of baskets from
Kyler Filewich set up a
Dillon Bailey three to cap off the run. Wofford would go up by as many as 24 points later in the half and would ultimately leave with a 90-67 win at Western Carolina. The team has now won five-straight road conference games for the first time since the historic 2018-19 season.
Wofford will be back in action for the season finale on Saturday, March 1, as the team will take on Furman University at 2:00 p.m. The final game of the regular season will serve as senior day. Seven Terriers will be honored – four players and three managers.
