SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team (16-15, 10-8) fell on a last-second three-pointer 78-75 to the Furman Paladins (23-8, 11-7) on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on senior day. The Terriers trailed by 19 points in the first half but used a strong second stanza to get back in the game.
Wofford's
Kyler Filewich, who notched his 11
th double-double of the season, logged 11 rebounds on the day. That brings his total for the season up to 294, breaking Tim Johnson's total of 288 in the 2010-11 season to set the new single-season rebounding record during the Division I era.
The Terriers shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the field while knocking down eight threes. Furman finished the day shooting 45.1 percent (23-51) from the field and 10-of-25 from three. Furman knocked down 22 free throws on 28 attempts. Wofford shot 21 free throws, cashing in on 15 of them.
Three Terriers finished in double-digits as both
Kyler Filewich and
Corey Tripp scored 16 points each.
Jackson Sivills followed behind with 11 points.
Justin Bailey and
Dillon Bailey scored nine apiece, and
Jeremy Lorenz added nine points off the bench.
Wofford dominated the glass, outrebounding Furman 39-24 including 17 offensive rebounds.
Kyler Filewich led the efforts on the glass as the big man grabbed 11 rebounds to accompany his 16 points. Filewich recorded his 11
th double-double of the season and the 20
th of his career at Wofford.
Jackson Sivills recorded five boards as well. The Terriers totaled 18 second chance points and 36 points in the paint.
Furman came out of the gate hot, going on a 12-0 run to start the game.
Jackson Sivills ended the skid with a three-pointer to give the team its first points of the afternoon.
Corey Tripp followed that up with a nice jumper to get the game back down to seven points with 14:30 remaining in the first half.
The Paladins responded, however, as the team went on a 10-2 run to get the lead out to 15 points, 22-7. The team would hold a double-digit lead over the next several minutes including a 19-point advantage, its largest lead of the game. Wofford scored 13 points compared to three from Furman in the closing minutes of the half as the Terriers entered the break trailing 40-29.
Kyler Filewich opened the half with a layup, but Furman had an answer at the other end. The Paladins pushed their lead back out to 13 points and began to take control again with just under 16 minutes left in the contest. Wofford responded with six-straight points to cut the deficit to seven points, 49-42.
It was a back-and-forth affair from there as both teams began to trade baskets. Wofford climbed within three points after a
Corey Tripp jumper with 11:41 remaining. The Paladins answered every punch the Terriers through, however, bringing their lead to eight points with 4:53 left in the game.
The Terriers finally broke through after a 10-0 run gave the team a 74-70 lead with 1:13 remaining in the contest.
Dillon Bailey scored the first four points of the run, followed by a poster dunk from
Corey Tripp in what turned out to be a three-point play.
Jackson Sivills closed the run with a three-pointer.
Furman marched down the court and nailed a three-pointer with 53 seconds left. Wofford found a look at the basket on the other end but could not find the bottom of the net. The Paladins were fouled on their next trip down, knocking down both free throws to take a 75-74 lead with 15 seconds remaining. With eight seconds on the clock,
Corey Tripp would head to the free throw line. The senior guard knocked down the back end of the pair, tying the game at 75-all. Furman made a three-pointer with just one second remaining to take a take a three-point lead. The Terriers found a look at a game-tying shot at the buzzer, but it was just short, resulting in a 78-75 loss.
The next game for the Terriers will be on Saturday, March 8, as the team will play in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The Terriers will enter the game as the No. 6 seed and will at 6:00 p.m against No. 3 ETSU.
