KENNESAW, Ga. – On a rainy Sunday afternoon, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated 16-14 by Kennesaw State at Fifth Third Stadium. The Owls scored the first four goals of the game, but the Terriers recovered to tie the game at the half. Wofford took a 10-6 lead in the middle of the third quarter, but six goals in the fourth quarter pushed the Owls to the 16-14 win.
Wofford was led by
Bria Foley with three goals and five assists for eight points.
Carlie Cutinella scored three goals with one assist and also led the team with five draw controls.
Laura Montagna had three goals, and five Terriers had one goal each.
Four Terriers had two caused turnovers each as Wofford had a 9-8 lead in that category. Wofford also had the advantage in shots at 32 to 25.
Barrett Rowe led the team with three ground balls as the team had a 16-13 lead in ground balls. Ellas Smithers had five saves in goal.
The Owls scored the first four goals of the game before the Terriers got on the board with a goal by
Laura Montagna with 3:25 left in the first quarter.
Olivia Graebner added a goal to make it a 4-2 game at the end of the first quarter. Wofford started the second quarter with a goal by
Vivian Chiomento. After a goal by Kennesaw State,
Emma Stalteri and
Laura Montagna scored for the Terriers to tie the game at 5 with 8:17 on the clock. The Owls regained the lead, but
Carlie Cutinella tied it up at 6 with 5:25 remaining in the half.
Ninety seconds into the second half,
Bria Foley scored a free position goal to give the Terriers their first lead of the game at 7-6.
Carlie Cutinella added a goal and another goal by Foley made it a 9-6 lead and forced the Owls to call a timeout.
Christina Mallon scored her first career goal at the 8:33 mark as Wofford extended the lead to 10-6. The Owls answered with the next three goals in less than three minutes.
Laura Montagna ended the run as Wofford had an 11-9 lead. A goal as time expired in the quarter by the Owls was upheld by replay review for an 11-10 game headed to the fourth quarter.
Bria Foley opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal less than thirty seconds into play. A man-up goal by the Owls cut the lead to one, and they quickly tied the game at 12-12 fifteen seconds later. A free position goal with 7:20 on the clock gave the Owls a lead and they added a goal for a 14-12 advantage. Wofford got one goal back when
Izzy Woods found the back of the net with 5:58 remaining. A free position goal with a man-up gave the Owls a 15-13 lead with 4:22 left.
Carlie Cutinella made it a one-goal game a minute later, but Kennesaw State scored for a 16-14 lead with 3:01 left on the clock. The Owls played most of the final three minutes with a man advantage and held on for the win.
Kennesaw State is now 3-6 overall. They were led by Alyssa Angelo with four goals and four assists for eight points, while Shannon Harrington had five goals.
Wofford (1-5) will play the next four games on the road, with visits to Cincinnati and Xavier next weekend. The next home game will be on Wednesday, April 2, against Furman.
