Baseball Loses Both Ends of Twin Bill at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Early first-inning deficits proved costly twice for the Wofford baseball team Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium as the Terriers fell in both legs of a doubleheader to the Spartans. Game one was a 9-2 result with the second an 11-1 affair in seven innings. The Terriers are now 22-14 (2-6 SoCon) as the Spartans improve to 16-18 (6-2 SoCon).

Game One
Cullen Condon (1-2) suffered the loss as the starter for Wofford, giving up eight runs total with only three earned. Dylan Rhadans and Grant Comstock combined to hold the Spartans in check for the final 5.1 innings, as Rhadans allowed just one run with Comstock working a 1-2-3 frame.

UNCG starter Sam Murchison (5-3) picked up the win after giving up just two runs in 6.2 innings of action.

The Terriers were held to only three hits in the contest as Lucas Manning, James Layman, and Tanner Hardin each collected one. Niko Brini worked a pair of walks, and Raul Feliz added one. Manning drove home the lone Terrier RBI.

The game opened with UNCG taking advantage of a Terrier error. In the bottom of the first, the Spartan lead-off hitter reached on a throwing error, and that gave way to a pair of long balls creating all five UNCG runs in the inning. Four of the five runs were unearned, but UNCG still held an early 5-0 lead.

The Spartans tacked on two more in the second and one more in the third for an 8-0 lead through three. Wofford cracked through in the top of the sixth when a wild pitch scored Ethan Belk. Lucas Manning would later single home James Layman to cut the margin to 8-2.

A sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh pushed the UNCG lead to 9-2, which is where it stood for the remainder of the contest as the Spartans won game one of the twin bill.

Game Two
Terrier starter Branton Little (4-4) suffered the loss in the same unlucky fashion as Condon in game one. Pitching 5.0 innings, Little was tagged for eight runs but only three earned with four strikeouts.

Jay Miller (2-3) secured the win with 6.1 innings as the UNCG starter with one run allowed.

Wofford recorded only two hits with Adam Haber and Tanner Hardin notching them. Four Terriers drew a walk, with Haber adding one to reach base twice. When on base, he did his best to help manufacture offense by swiping a career-high three steals. The other three walks were drawn by David Wiley, Ryan Wynn, and Tyler Bak. Lucas Manning again recorded the lone Terrier RBI.

The bottom of the first saw four UNCG runs, which again was aided by a Terrier miscue in the field.

Pitching settled in from there with back-to-back scoreless innings until another four-spot for the Spartans in the fourth.

Wofford scored in the top of the fifth with Lucas Manning's bunt pushing Adam Haber across the plate. The margin was 8-1.

However, three UNCG runs in the seventh would invoke an early end with an 11-1 score.

The Terriers will look to get one back with the series finale tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
