CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team got the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but could not complete the late comeback at Hennon Stadium Friday evening, falling 7-4 to Western Carolina. The Terriers drop to 24-16 (3-8 SoCon) as the Catamounts improve to 18-20 (3-8 SoCon).
Branton Little (4-5) suffers the loss as the starter for Wofford, tossing 4.2 innings with seven runs allowed on nine hits.
Grant Comstock hurled 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen with a pair of strikeouts, and
Austin Laughlin pitched a scoreless frame.
Catamount starter Dusty Revis (3-4) picked up the win after pitching 7.0 innings with just three runs surrendered on five hits and two walks.
WCU outhit Wofford 13-9 with
David Wiley pacing the Terriers at 3-for-3 on the evening. He added an RBI and drew a walk to accompany his trio of knocks, reaching base four total times. One of Wiley's hits was a solo home run, his third of the season.
Tanner Hardin was the only other Terrier with multiple hits, collecting two with a walk.
Niko Brini and
Ryan Wynn each recorded an RBI with a base hit. Brini's hit was a triple, and
Andrew Mannelly added another extra-base hit with a double.
Wofford struck first quickly with a one-out solo home run by
David Wiley that cleared the right center wall. The Terriers held a quick 1-0 edge.
However, Western Carolina had a quick response with four runs in the bottom of the first. The Catamounts pulled ahead 4-1.
Things settled down from there until the bottom of the fifth when WCU posted three more runs with a pair of doubles. The margin moved to 7-1.
The Terriers did not quit, plating a pair in the top of the seventh. After
Tanner Hardin singled to open the frame,
Niko Brini delivered an RBI triple. A wild pitch would then score Brini, making the score 7-3.
Wofford added one more run in the top of the eighth when
Ryan Wynn's RBI single up the middle pushed home Brini. The Terriers pulled closer at 7-4.
Down to their final chance in the top of the ninth, the Terriers threatened after a two-out single by the pinch-hitting
Adam Haber and a walk by Hardin. With the potential tying run at the dish, Wofford looked to complete the comeback, but an untimely strikeout ended the effort and sealed a 7-4 Catamount win.
The two sides will meet up once more tomorrow afternoon with the series tied at 1-1. The rubber match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
