Women’s Lacrosse Falls To Furman

SPARTANBURG, S.C.– A late rally by the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was not enough on Wednesday night as Furman University came away with a 20-18 win at Gibbs Stadium. The Paladins led 11-10 at the half and the Terriers were down by two goals at 16-14 heading to the fourth quarter. After Furman extended the lead to 20-15, Wofford answered with the last three goals of the game before time expired on the comeback.    
 
Olivia Graebner led the Terriers with six goals, the most by a Terrier in a game this season. Bria Foley added five goals and an assist for six points, along with seven draw controls. Emma Stalteri had three goals and Carlie Cutinella added a pair. Vivian Chiomento had seven draw controls, putting her over the 100 career draw control mark. Barrett Rowe led the team with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Ella Smithers had four saves in goal, with Hannah Taylor adding two.

As a team, Wofford led Furman in ground balls (21 to 18) and Furman had more turnovers (18 to 15). Both teams had 31 shots on goal. The 18 goals scored by Wofford were the most this season.
 
The Paladins scored the first two goals in the first two minutes of the game. Wofford answered with a goal by Emma Stalteri, but Furman pushed the lead to 3-1 at the 8:56 mark. A goal by Carlie Cutinella and a pair of goals by Olivia Graebner gave the Terriers a 5-3 lead with 6:56 left in the first quarter. After a free position goal by Furman, Wofford had another goal by Olivia Graebner and one goal by Bria Foley to take a 6-4 lead a minute into the second quarter.
 
Furman was able to tie the game with back-to-back goals to make it 6-6, but Wofford again responded with back-to-back goals by Bria Foley for an 8-6 lead with 8:07 on the clock. The Paladins tied the game at 8-8 before another Bria Foley goal made it 9-8 in favor of the Terriers with four minutes left in the half. Three-straight goals by Furman gave them an 11-9 lead before a Bria Foley goal with 36 seconds on the clock made it an 11-10 game at the break.
 
The second half began with a goal by the Paladins and the two teams traded goals for a 13-12 game after Olivia Graebner and Carley Irvin got on the board for the Terriers. Furman then was able to score three straight to open up a 16-12 advantage with 5:48 left in the third quarter. Carlie Cutinella and Emma Stalteri were able to get the Terriers back to a 16-14 deficit at the end of the third quarter.
 
After Furman scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter for a 19-14 lead, Christina Mallon ended the run with a free position goal. The Paladins had one more goal with 9:06 on the clock for a 20-15 lead, their largest of the game. Wofford wasn't done, as a goal by Emma Stalteri cut into the lead and then in the last two minutes, Olivia Graebner scored twice for the 20-18 final margin.
 
Furman is 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Paladins were led by Lily Toole with eight goals and four assists for twelve points, the most by an opponent this season.
 
Wofford (3-7, 0-1) will be on the road on Saturday at Longwood before returning home next Wednesday, April 9, to host Winthrop.
