FARMVILLE, Va.– The Wofford College women's lacrosse team scored six goals in the first half and added six goals in the second half on the way to a 12-6 road win over Longwood at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers scored first, but the Terriers used a 6-0 run on the way a 6-3 lead at the half. A 5-0 run in the second half propelled the Terriers to the 12-6 victory.
Eight different Terriers scored goals in the game, with
Olivia Graebner and
Bria Foley each scoring three. Wofford had a commanding lead in shots, with a season-high 40 to Longwood's 25. The Terriers also had a 15 to 6 advantage in draw controls, with
Vivian Chiomento and
Mia Leon each having six.
Wofford caused ten turnovers to only eight by the Lancers, with all ten turnovers by different players. Ground balls were tied at 12 each, as
Olivia Graebner,
Barrett Rowe and
Carley Irvin each had a pair.
Ella Smithers had seven saves in goal, with the six goals allowed a season-low for the team.
The Terriers won the opening draw and had the first six shots of the game, but the Lancers got on the board first at the 5:16 mark of the first quarter.
Bria Foley tied the game with a goal with 1:24 left in the quarter. In the first minute of the second quarter,
Olivia Graebner scored on a free position shot to give Wofford the 2-1 lead.
Izzy Woods added a free position goal at the 13:25 mark for a 3-1 advantage. After
Ella Smithers saved a free position shot by the Lancers, the Terriers went down the field and
Bria Foley scored for a 4-1 lead with 8:45 remaining in the half.
Ella Bartlett and
Olivia Graebner added goals as Wofford had a 6-1 advantage with 2:48 left in the half. The Lancers scored the next two goals for a 6-3 game at the half.
Carlie Cutinella scored less than thirty seconds into the second half with a woman-up goal for a 7-3 lead. Longwood answered five minutes later with a free position shot to make it 7-4. That was as close as the Lancers could come to the Terriers however, as Wofford went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-4 lead with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter after goals by
Laura Montagna,
Olivia Graebner,
Emma Stalteri,
Bria Foley and
Carley Irvin. Longwood scored two goals in the final 3:44 of the game for the 12-6 margin when time expired.
Longwood is 0-10 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Lancers were led by Jordan Fitzgerald with three goals, while Ellie Rumbaugh added two goals.
Wofford (4-8, 1-2) will return home on Wednesday, April 9, to host Winthrop at 6:00 p.m.
