SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named today its selections for baseball pitcher and player of the week for competition from May 5-11. Wofford junior right-handed pitcher
Carter Rasmussen was selected as the league's pitcher of the week. The selections are made by the league office.
This is the first SoCon Pitcher of the Week nod for Rasmussen in his career and the second by a Terrier this season, joining
Champ Davis, who was honored on March 17. The selection marks back-to-back seasons that Wofford has recorded at least two pitchers of the week and makes four out of the last five years with at least two honorees.
Rasmussen, a native of Justin, Texas, pitched twice out of the bullpen on the week and totaled 6.0 innings of work. He struck out 11 batters and walked only one, allowing just two hits. Opposing batters hit just .100 against him as he surrendered no runs en route to a win and a save.
The week opened with Rasmussen tossing the final 3.2 innings against Presbyterian in Wofford's 7-2 midweek win. He entered the contest with a one-on, one-out jam in the top of the sixth, striking out two batters to strand the runner. He put the clamps on the Blue Hose offense to close the contest, holding them to just one hit as he walked no one and surrendered no runs to secure his fifth win of the season. Rasmussen struck out seven batters to match his career best.
He followed up with 2.1 innings to close out the Friday win at ETSU. Entering again with a runner on base, this time with two outs, Rasmussen again notched a strikeout to strand the runner and preserve a two-run advantage. Rasmussen allowed just a hit and a walk with four punchouts to secure his third save of the campaign.
Rasmussen now leads the team in saves with three and is tied for the team lead in wins with five. He posts a team-best 50 strikeouts with a 3.83 ERA.
The Terriers are home this week to host VMI in the final three regular season contests. The series against the Keydets opens on Wednesday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. The Friday tilt is Senior Day at Russell C. King Field.
