Women’s Soccer Fights for a 1-1 Draw on Senior Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team concluded Senior Day at Snyder Field on Sunday afternoon with their second-straight draw of the season. After letting up an early goal against Charleston Southern, the Terriers answered back late in the second half to secure the 1-1 draw.

Before today's match, the Wofford women's soccer team recognized eight seniors for Senior Day. The seniors are student manager Jen Szlosek, goalkeeper Rylee Godbold, defender Sydney Soehn, forward Ines Obradovac, midfielder Ansley Elizalde, forward Saachi Bureau, midfielder Ellie Gower and forward Aly Bernhard.

The Terriers held immediate pressure to start the first half with the Buccaneers. A pass from Chalotte Simas to Ines Obradovac was the first strike of the match for the Terriers at 7:07, but was saved by the Buccaneers.

Obradovac led the Terriers' offense in the first half with two shots on goal. However, the Buccaneers' fast-paced offense broke the Terriers' defense down to squeeze in an unassisted goal in the box at 10:57.

At the end of half, the Terriers came back for a last-minute push to equalize the game but fell short.

The Terriers only had two shots in the first half compared to the Buccaneers' 10, with both teams having one corner kick each.

The Terriers came out of the break with an intense offense to try and equalize the game. True freshman Julia Grier got it started for the Terriers with multiple shot attempts to get the momentum going.

Throughout the half, the Terriers were creating great pressure on the Buccaneers' defense to keep the ball forward in the Terriers' favor.

At the 73rd minute, Elizalde took a shot at the lower left corner of the net, but was quickly saved by the Buccaneers, forcing a Terrier corner kick.

Ellie Gower took the corner kick to lob it into the box, setting up Grier to head it straight to the back left corner of the net for a 1-1 equalizer.

The second half ended with a last-minute stint for the Buccaneers, but the Terriers held firm to clinch the draw.

Notes:

The Terriers ended with 13 shots compared to the Buccaneers 17. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola had two saves compared to the Buccaneers six.

Obradovac had five shots with three on goal, while Grier ended with four shots and one goal. Saachi Bureau, Delaney Minor, Annie Andrews and Elizalde contribute one shot each.

Defender Carson DeMars contributed heavily to the Terriers' defense in today's game, playing a season-high of 68 minutes.

Freshman Shea Stanley played a season-high of 30 minutes.

The Terriers are back at Snyder Field Thursday for a matchup against Georgia State at 7 p.m.
