SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its weekly women's basketball player of the week award today with
Gabby Mundy earning her first-career honor. The selection is made by the league office.
Â
Mundy's selection is the second of the season for Wofford, as
Queen Ikhiuwu was tabbed player of the week on November 18. It is the first time since the 2018-19 season that two different players have earned the award in the same season.
Â
"I'm really happy for Gabby to receive this recognition," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "She has played well all month, but her play this past week on the road against Samford and Mercer was just outstanding. Not only was she able to score the ball, but her defense and leadership on the court was great and lead us to consecutive road wins."
Â
The freshman from Liberty Hill, Texas, helped guide the team to a 2-0 record last week. In an 80-56 win at Samford, Mundy posted 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists. She followed that up with a career-high 28 points in a 67-64 win at Mercer on Saturday. That is the most points scored by a Wofford freshman against a Division I opponent since Da'Ja Green scored 35 points against Samford (2-1-18). For the week, Mundy averaged a league-high 23 points per game.
Â
During Southern Conference play, Mundy is averaging 19.3 points per game to lead the conference. She is the first freshman in program history to reach double figures in the first six games of SoCon action. Mundy is scoring 14.1 points per game for the year, ranking her fourth in the conference and first among freshmen. She has totaled 83 assists to place her second in the SoCon.
Â
The Terriers have won six of their last seven games, including five in a row during SoCon play. Wofford defeated both Samford and Mercer on the road last week and will welcome Furman University to Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Friday, January 30, for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
