SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team found its first win of the season against the New Haven Chargers by a 21-15 margin on Friday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. Three Terriers scored their first goal of the season.
Wofford (1-3) was led by
McKenzie Moeller's four goals and two assists for a team-high six points.
Emma Stalteri scored four goals and an assist.
Kaitlyn Bellanca and
Katie Brosseau each had five points as well.
Vivian Chiomento led the team in draw controls with 15 to set a new school record. Wofford held the shot advantage, 33-28.
Wofford had 18 ground balls to New Haven's 14, led by
Olivia Graebner and
Brooke Meltcher's three each. This is the first time that Wofford had more ground balls than their opponent this season. Wofford caused 11 turnovers with three Terriers forcing two each.
The Terriers amassed a three-goal lead before the Chargers could score.
Sara Fenwick opened the scoring after 36 seconds thanks to a pass from
Kaitlyn Bellanca.
Emma Stalteri followed up two minutes later with a goal, with
Katie Brosseau on the pass this time. Bellanca grabbed a goal of her own shortly after. New Haven snagged one back, but
Ella Bartlett responded 30 seconds later.
McKenzie Moeller added two more goals while Stalteri nabbed a second goal of the day to end of the quarter, 7-1.
Ella Barlett kicked things off in the second quarter after three minutes with a free-position goal. New Haven responded one minute later.
Mia Leon grabbed her first goal of the season before the Chargers scored three unanswered goals.
Carlie Cutinella gave the Terriers some short-lived relief as the Chargers added one 42 seconds later to end the half, 11-6.
New Haven shrank the Wofford lead even further with four goals in the first four minutes of the second half.
Emma Stalteri ended their run with a goal off the pass from
Olivia Graebner. Bellanca gave the Terriers further relief, with Brosseau notching another assist. The Chargers responded with another goal just before the seven-minute mark, but Fenwick cancelled out their goal two minutes later. Moeller nabbed a second goal of the night, 30 seconds after a Wofford timeout, off a pass from Stalteri. Moeller returned the favor, assisting Stalteri 49 seconds later. Moeller's momentum did not stop there, as she added another goal before the end of the quarter, 17-11.
New Haven struck first in the final quarter after five minutes of play.
Ella Davis scored her first goal of the season shortly after.
Carlie Cutinella and Moeller combined for Cutinella's fifth goal of the season just thirty seconds later. Bellanca was able to convert a free-position shot to give Wofford an eight-goal lead. New Haven was desperate not to allow a running clock, grabbing three back within two minutes of each other.
Ava Santanastasio scored her first goal of the season with just over one minute on the game clock to close out the game, 21-15.
Wofford will host the Kennesaw State Owls on Sunday, March 1, at Gibbs Stadium at 12 p.m., with the game streamed on ESPN+.
