Softball Defeats Longwood 7-4 and 5-2 in Doubleheader to Sweep the Series

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford softball team defeated the Longwood Lancers 7-4 and 5-2 in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hope Field. The Terriers secured the series sweep with the victories today and improved to 19-4 on the season.

"The offense showed up all weekend," said head coach Chelsea Butler. "We had three different pitchers throw complete games – anytime we can make both of those things happen we are in good company."

GAME ONE
Margaret Axelson got the nod in game one against Longwood, pitching a full seven innings en route to a 7-4 victory. Axelson allowed three earned runs while striking out six batters. She improves to 5-2 on the year. Leading the way offensively was Lauren Archambault with a career-high three hits and three RBI. Kalli Petty, Kaytlin Greenwood, and Desirae Devine each recorded two hits. Devine, Brianna Stanley, and Lucy Cameron notched one RBI apiece. Rivers Sampson and Desirae Devine each stole one base. Wofford out hit Longwood 12-9.

Wofford kept Longwood scoreless for the first two innings, as the team was able to grab a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. After Kalli Petty doubled to center field, Desirae Devine hit a single to score Petty. The Terriers were able to keep Longwood off the board again in the third. Lauren Archambault singled to right field to get things going in the bottom half of the inning. After a fly out to center field, Brianna Stanley was able to drive in Archambault with a deep single to right center to give Wofford a 2-0 lead. Longwood was able to add a run in the fourth inning, but the Terriers responded with four runs in the latter part of the frame. Kaytlin Greenwood started the inning off with a double, and Desirae Devine would advance her to third with a successful bunt. Lucy Cameron followed that up with another bunt to score Greenwood. After that, Lauren Archambault drove in Addison Lucier and Lucy Cameron for a two RBI single. Archambault would later score on a wild pitch to put Wofford up 6-1 at the end of the fourth. Lauren Archambault drove in Desirae Devine in the bottom of the fifth inning for her third RBI of the game. The Terriers led 7-1. Longwood threatened late with three runs between the sixth and seventh inning, but Wofford was able to hold on for a 7-4 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
