KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team beat the Butler Bulldogs, 22-14, on Friday afternoon at Heritage High School. Wofford's offense scored a season-high 22 goals.
Wofford (2-6) was led by
Olivia Graebner, netting three goals on three shots.
Sara Fenwick matched her with three goals, finding success on three of her four attempts. Leading the charge was
Emma Stalteri, who scored four goals, converting every shot on target.
McKenzie Moeller chipped in two goals and an assist, with one of her goals clinching the game-winner. The Terriers held the shot advantage, 33-20. Wofford had 15 ground balls to Butler's 17, led by
Brooke Meltcher's four. Wofford caused 13 turnovers to the Bulldogs' 12, with Meltcher causing five herself.
The match kicked off with Butler snagging the first goal at 13:57. Graebner quickly evened things up at 13:17. The Terriers took over from there, with Fenwick scoring twice and
Mia Leon adding another, pushing Wofford to a 4-1 lead by 11:14. Butler fought back with goals from Emma Palmer and Elise Latham, assisted by Ryan, closing the gap to 4-3. Wofford's offense took off again, with
Kaitlyn Bellanca and Fenwick, assisted by
Ella Davis, extending the lead to 6-3. Stalteri and Moeller added two more goals, ending the first quarter with an 8-3 advantage.
The second quarter saw the Terriers extend their lead with a series of rapid goals. Stalteri started it off with an unassisted goal at 11:49, followed by Graebner at 11:22, and
Carlie Cutinella at 10:16.
Vivian Chiomento's draw controls were instrumental in maintaining this offensive momentum. Though Butler tried to fight back with goals from Genna Sulek and Sarah Gastineau, Wofford held firm. Additional goals from
Ella Bartlett at 2:01 and Davis at 1:13 solidified Wofford's lead, concluding the quarter at 13-6.
In the third quarter, Wofford came out strong. Chiomento seized a key draw control, leading to Cutinella's goal assisted by
Katie Brosseau at 14:05. Moeller and Leon each added to the score, with Leon's second goal coming at 7:33, again assisted by Brosseau. The defense played their part too, with
Barrett Rowe causing a turnover and collecting a ground ball. Despite Butler's efforts, including a goal from Kerrin McGovern at 2:32, Wofford maintained control. Stalteri added another goal, and the Terriers capitalized on turnovers to keep the pressure on. They ended the quarter leading 18-7, securing a commanding victory.
The final quarter saw Wofford responding to Butler's early pressure. Despite Butler's initial push,
Ainsley Towle scored at 11:31, assisted by
Laura Montagna. Graebner and Stalteri added to their tallies, countering Butler's attempts.
Ava Santanastasio's goal, assisted by
Meghan Donahue at 5:01, further cemented their lead.
Brooke Meltcher's defensive efforts, including a crucial turnover, kept Wofford in control. The Terriers' defense held strong against Butler's attempts, sealing a 22–14 victory.
