Softball Defeats College of Charleston 9-1 in Five Innings

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College softball team used five runs in the first inning to help the team to a 9-1 win over College of Charleston at Hope Field Tuesday evening. The Terriers won the game in five innings and improve to 16-4 on the season.

"The power is in the response," said head coach Chelsea Butler on responding from a tough loss on Sunday. "It was great to be back at home in front of our fans. Our offense has been doing it all year, so itt is great to see the returners lead the freshmen in that area."

Natalya Salo got the start against College of Charleston, pitching 4.0 innings with only one run allowed on one hit and three strikeouts. Salo improves to 4-1 on the season with the win. Abby Greenwood pitched the final inning of the game, allowing one hit, zero runs, and striking out one batter. Kate Platte, Brianna Stanley, Kaytlin Greenwood, and Desirae Devine all recorded two hits apiece. Gracie Parker had a two RBI triple to match Stanley's two RBI. Platte, Greenwood, Petty, and Sampson all recorded an RBI as well. Greenwood and Devine led the team with one stolen base apiece.

Kalli Petty started the five-run first inning off with an RBI single up the middle to score Kate Platte. Gracie Parker followed that up with a triple to left center to score both Petty and Brianna Stanley. A single to the shortstop from Kaytlin Greenwood drove in Parker. Greenwood would eventually score after a stolen base and a pair of Charleston errors, giving Wofford a 5-0 lead to start the game. Natalya Salo kept the Cougars scoreless in the second inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Brianna Stannley drove in Addison Lucier to put Wofford up 6-0 heading into third. After a pair of bunts from Desirae Devine and Lauren Archambault in the third inning, Kate Platte would score Devine off a single in the infield. Rivers Sampson later drove in Archambault to put the Terriers ahead 8-0. Charleston was able to score one run in the fourth inning, but Brianna Stanley ended the game in the fifth inning with an RBI single to right field. Wofford would defeat Charleston 9-1 in five innings.

The Terriers will take a nine-day break before hosting Longwood University for the team's first three-game series of the year. The Terriers will play one game on Friday, March 13, and two games on Saturday, March 14.
