SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team fought back from a halftime deficit, but ultimately fell to the Campbell Camels, 13-11, on Wednesday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium.
Wofford (1-5) was led by two goals each from
Sara Fenwick,
Carlie Cutinella,
Katie Brosseau, and
McKenzie Moeller. Cutinella led the team with four points.
Katie Brosseau led the team in draw controls with 5. The Camels held the shot advantage, 23-22. Wofford had 25 ground balls to Campbell's 21, led by
Brooke Meltcher's eight for a single game record. Wofford and Campbell caused seven turnovers each, with Meltcher and
Ella Bartlett causing two each.
The Terriers found the net first with
McKenzie Moeller placing the first shot of the day past the Campbell goalkeeper. Campbell responded after eight minutes with two goals of their own to grab the lead.
Carlie Cutinella did not let them hold the lead for long, scoring off the pass from
Ella Bartlett two minutes later. As the clock dwindled, the Camels struck to hold a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter.
It took the Camels 20 seconds to add onto their lead in the second quarter. Campbell added three more goals before
Mia Leon could find
Kaitlyn Bellanca for Wofford's first goal of the quarter. Campbell scored just 19 seconds later to cancel out Bellanca's goal.
Sara Fenwick cut the deficit down one minute later to send the teams into half-time, 8-4.
Katie Brosseau kicked off scoring in the second half after three minutes, but Campbell responded within a minute to nullify her goal. Shortly after,
Mia Leon had a goal disallowed for an illegal stick. With six minutes to play in the quarter, Fenwick finished a free-position shot to close the gap.
Ava Santanastasio scored her second goal of the season to put the Terriers within striking distance. The Camels pushed back with a goal quickly after, but Bellanca brought it back within two before the end of the quarter at 10-8.
The Camels were the first to score in the final period after two minutes of play. Their lead extended to five before
Carlie Cutinella found the back of the net. 50 seconds later, Cutinella assisted a goal for Moeller.
Ainsley Towle her first goal of the season, but the Terriers were unable to bring the game any closer, 13-11.
Wofford will host the UMass Lowell River Hawks on Sunday, March 9, at Gibbs Stadium at 4 p.m., with the game streamed on ESPN+.
