Wofford Women’s Lacrosse Comeback Falls Short

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford College women's lacrosse team fell to the the UMass Lowell River Hawks, 15-14, on Monday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. Wofford went down, 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. They were able to grab a two-goal lead by the end of the third quarter, but fell short in the end.

Wofford (1-6) was led by Emma Stalteri and Carlie Cutinella, each with three goals and an assist. Olivia Graebner had two goals and an assist as well. Katie Brosseau led the team in draw controls with 9. The Terriers held the shot advantage, 32-30. Wofford had 35 ground balls to UML's 29, led by Brooke Meltcher's eight. Wofford caused seven turnovers to Lowell's 12, with Meltcher and Graebner causing two each.

Kaitlyn Bellanca opened up scoring with a goal in 49 seconds. It took the River Hawks four minutes to respond with a long run directly off a Wofford turnover. UML tacked on five more goals before the end of the quarter, 6-1.

Emma Stalteri converted from a free position shot to open the second quarter. The River Hawks responded 30 seconds later on the other end of the field. Stalteri found the net for her tenth goal of the season a few minutes later, again from a free position. While UML grabbed another, Katie Brosseau cut back into the lead after taking advantage of a turnover from the River Hawks. Olivia Graebner shrank the deficit temporarily, but the River Hawks nullified the goal 43 seconds later with one of their own. Bellanca and Carlie Cutinella kept the Terriers within reaching distance with two free-position goals in the final two minutes of the first half, 9-7.

Cutinella converted a free-position goal to bring the Terriers within one after five minutes of play in the second half. UML found room to push back with a goal of their own 30 seconds later. Brosseau found McKenzie Moeller free in front of the goal for another Terrier goal. Shortly after, Emma Stalteri found Cutinella to tie the game. Mia Leon was the one to give Wofford the lead with an unassisted goal. Graebner and Moeller would push the Terriers further ahead, but the River Hawks snagged one back with 22 seconds remaining in the quarter, 13-11.

UML struck first in the final quarter within one minute. They went on to tie the game with seven minutes left to play. Two minutes later, the River Hawks found the lead again, pushing their lead to two just 40 seconds later. Stalteri hoped to flip the momentum around after being found by Graebner in front of the goal, but it was not enough, 15-14.

Wofford will travel to Maryville, Tennessee, to face the Butler Bulldogs on Friday, March 20, at Heritage High School at 2 p.m.
