SPARTANBURG, S.C. –The Wofford men's golf team placed fifth as the host of the Wofford Invitational, as junior
Glover Amick topped his career best to place tied for ninth with a score of two-under 211. Four out of five Terriers in the team event placed in the top 20 to secure a one-under 851 score on Tuesday afternoon at the par-71 Country Club of Spartanburg.
The Terriers hosted the three-day tournament as they opened Sunday with a 287 before carding another 287 on Monday. Wofford came back in the final round to card a 277 to clinch their fifth place finish. Nationally ranked Division II No. 19 USC-Aiken grabbed the first-place finish with a 12-under 840 in the 13-team field. Western Carolina's Tyler Jones took home first place with a nine-under 204 in the 88-player field. Wofford finished with the third-best par-five average at 4.42 and had the fourth-best par-three and par-four average with a 3.18 and 4.17, respectively. Wofford also finished with the third-most eagles with three and the second-most birdies with 54.
Amick led Wofford with a 69 in round one before carding a 72 in round two. Amick came back in the final round to card a 70 with an eagle on the par-5 15
th hole to secure his tie for ninth place, a career best. Amick had the second-best par-five average during the tournament with a 4.11.
Ben Jordan and
Miller Carr followed in a tie for 14
th with a 213. Jordan carded 71s in each round as he posted the fifth-best par-four average with an even 4.00. Carr opened up the first two rounds of the tournament with 74s before coming back on the last day to shoot a six-under 65 for a new career low. It was the best finish for Carr as a Terrier.
Will Brown came in next with a tie for 20
th place at a one-over 214, a career best. Brown opened up his first round with a 73 but cut it to a new career low of 70 in the second round. Brown closed his play with a 71 to secure his first top 20 finish of the season. Brown tied for the most birdies with 15 during the tournament.
Charles Warren closed out team play for the Terriers in 58
th place with a 14-over 227 score. Warren (74-77-76) had one eagle during the tournament in round two.
Seven individuals also competed for Wofford.
Andrew Neal and
Andrew Aquino were the top individuals, placing in a tie for 14
th. Neal earned a new career round low of 66 in his opening round before he came back to card a 76 and 71 in the last two rounds. Aquino (73-70-70) held the seventh-best par-five average in a 4.22 and shot one eagle during the tournament. Aquino also had the eighth most pars with 35.
Jack West and
Will Jones came next, tied for 26
th with a two-over 215 score. West (69-74-72) had an eagle in each round of the tournament, giving him the second most eagles made with three. West also had the second-best par-five average with a 4.11. Jones (75-65-75) carded a career low of 65 during the second round with one eagle in the round.
Marshall Butler (75-80-74) and
Major Lenning (72-78-79) tied for 66
th place with a 16-over 229.
Davis Neal (76-78-80) finished the tournament in 83
rd place with a 21-over 234 score.
The Terriers will compete next at the Southern Conference Tournament in Columbia, South Carolina, starting on Monday, April 27.
