GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College softball team defeated Furman 6-5 in eight innings in game two of a doubleheader on Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina. The Terriers dropped game one 6-4, setting up a rubber match tomorrow morning.

Wofford posts a record of 30-16 with a 7-10 mark in conference play. The team has reached 30 wins in back-to-back seasons now.

GAME ONE
Abby Greenwood suffered her fifth loss of the season in the 6-4 loss in game one. Greenwood pitched 5.1 innings while allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. Sydney Baker closed out the final .2 innings with one hit and no runs. Brianna Stanley led the way offensively with a 3-of-4 appearance at the plate with a double. Kate Platte also went 2-of-4 with one run scored. Rivers Sampson and Kalli Petty each tallied one RBI. Desirae Devine led the team with one stolen base. Wofford was out hit 13-7. The Terriers committed one error to Furman's three.

Wofford started the game with two quick runs to take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Addison Lucier walked to start the game. Brianna Stanley advanced Lucier to third with a double down the left field line. Lucier eventually scored from a Furman error as Wofford led 1-0. Stanley advanced to third on an error and would find home after a sacrifice fly from Kalli Petty. Furman responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame, however, shortening the deficit to 2-1.

The Terriers found two more runs in the second, extending the lead to 4-1. Addison Lucier reached first off a fielder's choice, with Kate Platte advancing Lucier to second after an infield single. Another single from Brianna Stanley loaded the bases. Rivers Sampson sent Lucier home with a sacrifice fly, and Kate Platte would also reach home after an error on the same play. The Terriers held that 4-1 lead all the way until the bottom of the fifth, with Furman tying the game at 4-4 after scoring three runs. The Paladins added two more runs to take a 6-4 lead in the sixth. Wofford could not complete the comeback in the seventh, losing game one 6-4.

GAME TWO
Natalya Salo improved to 8-3 on the season after a 6-5 win in eight innings in game two. Salo pitched the full slate, allowing five runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Brianna Stanley led the team after batting 2-of-4 with three RBI. Kate Platte went 3-of-5 in the lead off spot. Addison Lucier batted 1-of-2 with a solo homer to center field. Gracie Parker and Kaytlin Greenwood both recorded an RBI as well. Platte and Parker led the team with one stolen base apiece. Wofford out hit Furman 12-5 while committing zero errors to Furman's four.

It was a slow start for both offenses, as neither team scored for the first two innings. Four consecutive bunts from the Terriers highlighted a two-run third inning. After Kate Platte led the inning off with a single, Addison Lucier reached first with a bunt. Platte advanced to third on a Furman error, leading to an RBI bunt from Brianna Stanley to give Wofford a 1-0 advantage. Another bunt from Rivers Sampson set up the final bunt of the inning. Gracie Parker would score Lucier to end the frame. Furman answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs to take a commanding 5-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Desirae Devine started the inning with a triple to left center. Kaytlin Greenwood drove Devine in with an infield groundout to shorten the deficit to 5-3. Kate Platte singled a few at batters later and would eventually steal second. Brianna Stanley singled up the middle after that, scoring Platte to bring the Furman lead within one, 5-4. Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, but Addison Lucier tied the game at five-all in the sixth with a solo shot to right center.

After another scoreless frame in the seventh for both groups, Kate Platte started the eighth inning with a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt from Addison Lucier advanced Platte all the way to third, leading to a Brianna Stanley single to score Platte and give the team a 6-5 lead. Furman got a runner on first to start the bottom half of the frame, but Natalya Salo retired the next three batters for the Paladins to seal a 6-5 victory in eight innings.

The Terriers will be back in action tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. for a rubber match. The game can be streamed live on ESPN+.
