ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wofford College softball team took down the Winthrop Eagles 5-2 on Wednesday night in Rock Hill. The Terriers used three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away from the Eagles. Wofford improves to 26-10 on the year.

Margaret Axelson got the start in the 5-2 midweek win, going a full seven innings. Axelson allowed two runs on four hits to improve her record to 7-5 on the year. She tied her career high of nine strikeouts and walked zero batters.
Addison Lucier led the team with a 1-of-1 appearance at the plate and an RBI.
Brianna Stanley tallied two RBI as well.
Rivers Sampson and
Desirae Devine had one RBI each.
Gracie Parker went 1-of-2 with two runs scored. The Terriers totaled six stolen bases – two of which were from
Kaytlin Greenwood. Wofford out hit Winthrop 7-4 and had one error compared to two from the Eagles.

It was a quiet start to the game for both teams, as it took three innings for either team to get on the board.
Margaret Axelson totaled four strikeouts in the first three innings, forcing Winthrop into three-straight 1-2-3 innings. Wofford broke through in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
Gracie Parker started the inning with a single up the middle, and
Addison Lucier was walked on the next at bat. Parker would eventually reach home after an error from Winthrop, giving Wofford a 1-0 lead. The Terriers added another run in the fourth, as
Kaytlin Greenwood stole back-to-back bases after a base hit to get on third base. A groundout from
Desirae Devine scored Greenwood to give Wofford a 2-0 advantage.

Winthrop responded, however, adding two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at two-all. After both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning, Wofford scored three runs to gain a 5-2 lead in the top of the seventh.
Abbi Campbell started the inning with a single to left field.
Gracie Parker followed that up with a walk, and both players would steal a base to get on second and third.
Addison Lucier tallied a sacrifice fly to score Campbell, putting Wofford up 3-2. After
Kate Platte reached first on a bunt,
Rivers Sampson singled to left field to score Parker.
Brianna Stanley followed that up with a groundout RBI to give Wofford a 5-2 lead entering the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Terriers were able to keep Winthrop scoreless in the frame, sealing a 5-2 victory on the road.

The Terriers will be back in action this weekend as the team will welcome UNCG on April 11-12. Wofford will play two games on Saturday with the series finale set for Sunday afternoon.
