Softball Splits Doubleheader with UNCG

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College softball team took game one 7-3 but lost game two 3-1 in a doubleheader against UNCG on Saturday afternoon at Hope Field. The Terriers threatened in the sixth inning of game two but could not complete the comeback. Wofford moves to 27-11 with a 5-6 mark in conference action.

GAME ONE
Abby Greenwood got the start in the 7-3 win, pitching a full 7.0 innings to improve her record to 11-3 on the season. Greenwood only allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out three batters. Brianna Stanley had an exciting game one, leading the team with a 2-of-3 performance at the plate with two RBI. Stanley tallied a double and her 10th homer of the season in the win. Abbi Campbell also went 2-of-3 from the plate with an RBI, while Rivers Sampson, Gracie Parker, and Kalli Petty each tallied one RBI as well. Abbi Campbell led the team with one stolen base. Wofford out hit UNCG 8-6. UNCG committed two errors compared to one by the Terriers.

It was a quiet start for both teams through the first two innings. After another scoreless inning from UNCG, Wofford was finally able to breakthrough in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Abbi Campbell started the inning with a single to left field. Campbell would steal second on the next at bat. With Campbell in scoring position, Brianna Stanley hit an RBI double to left center to put the Terriers ahead. UNCG answered in the top of the fourth to tie the game at one-all, however.

It was not until the bottom of fifth that the stalemate was broken, as Wofford scored five runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead. With two outs, Kate Platte was able to get on base with a single down the left field line. Platte would advance to second on a throwing error from the left fielder. Brianna Stanley was walked after that. On the next at bat, Rivers Sampson scored Platte with a single up the middle. Gracie Parker followed that up with a single to left field to drive in pinch runner Madison Thieke. With the bases loaded a few at bats later, Kalli Petty walked to score Rivers Sampson. Another run was driven in by a single from Abbi Campbell. Addison Lucier was hit by a pitch on the next at bat to send the final run of the inning home. UNCG added two runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 6-3 game, but Brianna Stanley blasted a ball to left field in response for her 10th homer of the season in the bottom half of the frame. The Terriers would take a 7-3 win in game one.

GAME TWO
Margaret Axelson got the start in game two as the senior hurler suffered her sixth loss of the season. Axelson pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Natalya Salo pitched the final 1.1 innings, not allowing a single hit. Brianna Stanley led the offensive efforts with a 1-of-2 appearance at the plate and an RBI. Kate Platte scored the lone run. UNCG out hit Wofford 6-5 while both teams committed one error.

It was a pitchers' duel for the first five innings of the game, as the score remained knotted up at zero for both teams. UNCG was the first team to get on the board, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Terriers responded in the bottom half of the frame with one run. Kate Platte started the inning off with a double to left center, and she would score on the next at bat. Brianna Stanley hit a ball in the left center gap to drive in Platte and bring the game within two runs, 3-1. Wofford was able to keep the Spartans from scoring in the top of the seventh, but the team had a 1-2-3 inning on offense in the bottom of the inning. The Terriers would lose game two 3-1.

Wofford will be back in action tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. series finale. The winner of the game will claim the series.
