Football Holds Gibbs Stadium Scrimmage

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College football team returned to Gibbs Stadium on Saturday morning for a short practice and scripted scrimmage of approximately 40 plays. Despite the early morning start, the heat index was above 100 degrees when practice ended at 9:45 a.m.

"We were really looking at a lot of young people today," said head coach Shawn Watson. "We got to see some of our younger players step up. We took our veteran players out, and we really wanted to rep those young guys. We need to keep cleaning up our work, but by and large they played really clean. The effort was outstanding once again. It has been really competitive all the way through camp. I am really proud of the kids and how hard they've worked. We've had a good camp and now we are getting ready to really spin out of camp season and get ready for The Citadel."

The practice began with individual position drills before moving to seven-on-seven. The quarterbacks combined to complete 8-of-10 attempts in the seven-on-seven period, with passes completed to seven different receivers.

In the scrimmage, the defense had a fumble recovery by Wyatt Ward and three sacks in the first twelve plays as they limited the offense to one first down reception. The offense picked things up with a first down run by Davis Penn and a scramble by Ethan Drumm for a first down. Isaiah Haithcock had a 30-yard touchdown reception from Drumm.

After a special teams period of punt and punt return, Jaxon Earle had an interception for the defense. Tay Franklin added a pair of rushing first downs, while Isaiah Haithcock had a first down reception from Kaeden Gilstrap. After a loose ball was recovered in the endzone for a touchdown, Sam Spence made a 48-yard field goal. The defense added two more sacks over the final six plays of the scrimmage.

The Terriers will take Sunday off before returning to the practice fields on Monday and Tuesday morning.

NOTABLES: The Southern Conference officials called only two penalties during the scrimmage … Wofford director of sports performance Keith Swift recently participated in the NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship with the Los Angeles Rams … The 2026 season begins at Gibbs Stadium on Saturday, August 29, against The Citadel at 6:00 p.m. Season and single game tickets are available by calling 864-597-4090 or visiting www.woffordterriers.com/tickets.
