SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford College women's soccer team defeated Gardner-Webb, 1-0, after a late goal in the second half at Snyder Field on Thursday night.
First Half
The Terriers and the Runnin' Bulldogs went back-and-forth in the beginning with Wofford putting on the pressure and controlling the possession.
Both teams had early opportunities, with a chance from Bailey Mullen at 9:17 and Julia Grier with a shot less than two minutes later. Gardner-Webb's Morgan Dewitt had a shot in the 17th minute that was saved by Elizabeth Navola.
Wofford continued to find opportunities, outshooting Gardner-Webb, 6-2, in the first half
Both teams continued to fight for possession but were unable to find success, ending the first half at 0-0.
Second Half
Wofford continued to add offensive pressure into the second half with a shot from Annie Andrews at 46:56 that was saved by Abril Montiel. Julia Grier found an opening for a breakaway that ended with a shot going high in the 55th minute, and Ella Jahromi added a shot a minute later.
Wofford's offense found its mark at 78:11, when Annie Andrews scored her first goal of the season off of a corner kick.
"We had been all up on them the whole game with so many opportunities and so many chances, and I just knew we were about to bury it," Annie Andrews said.
Gardner-Webb continued to try and find the equalizer but were unable to, securing Wofford the win at 1-0.
"Annie showed unbelievable character to come back in and get the game winning goal, that's what our team is about" head coach Kevin Dempsey said. "This is what we're about. A little adversity, individually and as a team, we just kept fighting and got the goal that we needed."
