Football Continues Preparation For 2026 Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Ten days into fall practice, the Wofford College football team held a situational scrimmage on Saturday morning on the practice fields. The team ran over 50 plays, including work in the red zone, during the two-hour session.

"We were physical and playing fast today, and I like that part," said head coach Shawn Watson. "We still have things to clean up. I'm encouraged with the way some of the young guys are playing because they're playing fast and doing a lot of really good things. By and large, we didn't have a whole lot of penalties today. I told the officials to really call it close, and they did a good job. We have some new rules, so it's nice to see us execute that part of it. I think both sides of the ball would tell you the same thing: we are at the point in practice that we've got everything in, and now it's time to detail everything. The execution piece becomes a premium. The next step is that we're going to finish up our situational football. We've got some things we need to get back to, like our red zone, two-minute, and goal line. We've got all of our special teams stuff in, and now it's time to refine all of that."

The practice began with a walk-through and a short individual position group period. During a seven-on-seven period, highlights included J.T. Fayard with a 30-yard completion to Cooper Williams and Max Walraven with a 30-yard completion to Finn Gunter on offense, while Trace Gaynes had a pass break-up on defense.

In the team situational scrimmage, Isaiah Nell had a first down run and a first down reception from J.T. Fayard, however the drive ended with a forced fumble by Javario Tinch. A first down pass from Ethan Drumm to Davis Penn was followed by two defensive penalties and a first down run by Tay Franklin, which set up a short touchdown run by Penn. Kaeden Gilstrap found Finn Gunter for three first down receptions, with Haven Maddox hitting a 37-yard field goal to end the drive.

The defense came up on the next segment with an interception by Javario Tinch, a fumble recovery by Jake Thorner, and a sack by Nicholas Mathious. In the red zone, J.T. Fayard had a ten-yard completion to Isaiah Nell and Elijah Frey capped the drive with a 35-yard field goal.

The Terriers will continue preparations with 9:00 a.m. practices on Sunday and Monday before another off day on Tuesday.
