SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Wofford College women's soccer team defeated Winthrop, 3-0, after two commanding goals early in the second half at Snyder Field on Thursday night.
"We worked a lot this week on creating chances and finishing those chances," said head coach
Kevin Dempsey. "People are taking their opportunities. We wanted our backline to get more involved and low and behold Layla scored a goal." Dempsey added that "we're excited [ending nonconference], moving the needle for the program compared to last season and now it's on to SoCon."
First Half
The first half began with the Terriers dominating possession. Wofford got their first goal of the game at 9:15, after a pass from
Annie Andrews gave
Maya Lake the breakaway to the net.
Winthrop struggled to find possession or scoring opportunities, as they only had three shots in the first half, all saved by
Elizabeth Navola.
Second Half
Feeling the success from the first half, the Terriers found the back of the net a second time just nine minutes into the second half, with a goal from
Annie Andrews.
With the consistent offensive pressure, Wofford had another shot from
Ella Jahromi that went high up top, just two minutes later.
The Terriers put the game out of reach with a goal from
Layla Washington in the 60
th minute.
The Terriers continued to hold up the backline, only allowing one shot from the Eagles to get through.
"All season we've been working to put the pieces together, and I think today, this game, the last before conference play, we did that," said Mullens. "I think we're feeling good about heading into conference play."
With the clock counting down into the final minutes, Wofford did not let up the offensive pressure, with three shots in the final thirty minutes of play. Winthrop was unable to make a comeback, ending the match with Wofford, 3-0.
"The most important thing is that we're one strong unit, that we have each other's backs, help each other, and have a good time," said defender
Bailey Mullen about tonight's defensive effort.
The Terriers have ended nonconference play with a .500 record for the first time since 2022.
