Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford volleyball is handed a 3-1 (22-30, 30-27, 30-24, 30-23) defeat from Southern Conference opponent UNC Greensboro in Benjamin Johnson Arena Sunday afternoon.
In game one, the Spartans (15-13, 8-6 SoCon) were held to a -.047 hitting percentage. Wofford took the first point of the game from a block by junior Liz Sheets and sophomore Joanna Suddath. A kill by sophomore Emily Lindborg gave UNCG their only lead in game one at 5-4. Tied at 6 each, a UNCG error gave the Terriers the lead back at 7-6 which they maintained throughout the game. Then a service ace by junior Carolyn Rivers gave Wofford a 21-16 edge. The victory was sealed with another block by Sheets and Suddath.
The Spartans jumped out early to a 6-0 score in game two. Then the Terriers (9-18, 2-12 SoCon) made for a more competitive game and fought back to take the lead with a kill by Suddath from sophomore Shanna Hughes to make the score 7-6. From then on the two teams kept the score tied 11 times before a kill by Lindborg from freshman Kimiko Naito put the Spartans in the lead at 21-20. UNCG held the lead by as many as four points before claiming the game with a kill by freshman Kayren Finney.
Down by five in game three (15-10), the Terriers rallied and tied the score at 15 with a kill by sophomore Sarah Palmer. Then a UNCG error gave Wofford the lead. A kill by sophomore Branagan Fuller pulled the Spartans to a 21-19 lead and they never looked back. Freshman Alissa Beaudway registered the game winning kill.
This time the Terriers jumped out early in game four leading 5-0 with kills from freshman Catelyn Amende, Palmer and Sheets. The Spartans battled back and tied the score at 8, then took a 9-8 lead with a kill from Lindborg. A kill by Fuller from classmate Lisa Fawell sealed the lead at 10-9. Junior Kaitlyn Nortz edged the Spartans over Wofford by four at 26-22. A kill by Fuller clinched the game and the match for UNCG.
Fuller recorded 17 kills and 49 total attacks to lead the match and pace the three Spartans with double digit kills. Lindborg finished with 14 kills and 37 total attacks, while Beaudway rounded out the trio with 10 kills and 27 total attacks. Nortz registered a match high .500 hitting percentage from eight kills, one error and 14 total attacks.
Two Spartans logged double digit assists. Naito finished with a team best 29, while Fawell followed with 21.
Sophomore Catherine Hanners led UNCG with 18 digs and senior Lauren Keiser finished with 17.
Wofford logged two Terriers with double digit kills. Hughes collected 13 kills and 35 total attacks and freshman Stacy Byrd concluded the match with 12 kills and 45 total attacks. Suddath finished with a match high 43 assists.
For the Wofford defense, Hughes paced the match with 19 digs, Palmer had 15 and Rivers finished with 12.
The Terriers travel to Greenville, S.C. Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup against Furman for more Southern Conference action.
