Wofford Wins 28-7 At The Citadel

CHARLESTON, SC – Wofford College went to The Citadel on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 28-7 win, scoring 21 points in the second half. The Terriers had rushing touchdowns from Justice Joslin, Dane Romero, Josh Collier and Michael Hobbs in the game as the defense had a strong showing as well.Wofford improves to 5-1 on the season and are 3-0 in conference play. The Citadel is 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Conference. The Terriers are currently in first place in the conference.

The Terriers were led by Kevious Johnson with 77 yards on twelve carries, as eleven different players ran the ball in the game. Josh Collier had 87 yards passing on 4-of-11 passing. Fenn Allen led the Wofford receivers with one catch for 31 yards.

After the Terrier defense stopped the Bulldogs on their first drive of the game, Wofford drove 73 yards in seven plays. Key to the drive was a 25-yard run by Kevious Johnson and a 28-yard run by Adrian Young. Justice Joslin ran the ball in from three yards out to cap the drive at 10:19 in the first quarter.

The next drive by The Citadel ended with a 25-yard field goal attempt by Mike Adams that was wide left. The Terriers were stopped on the next drive and were forced to punt. The Citadel drove into the red-zone, but were wide left on the field goal attempt.

Wofford was able to pick up a first down in the next drive, but Josh Collier was intercepted by Dwight House and returned 42 yards for the touchdown with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.

The teams then traded punts three times each in the second quarter, as the defenses were stifling in the afternoon heat. After a fourth Wofford punt, The Citadel’s next drive picked up two first downs, but Gary Blount intercepted Duran Lawson and returned it 18 yards. The Terriers picked up two first downs, and as time expired in the first half Patrick Mugan attempted a 49-yard field goal that was wide right.

The second half continued the defensive trend, as the teams traded punts to open the third quarter. On the next Wofford drive, after first down receptions by Andy Strickland and Tripp Smith, Ben Widmyer entered the game at quarterback for several plays. On the first play with Josh Collier back in the game, he pitched the ball to Dane Romero who ran 38-yards for the touchdown at 5:06 in the third quarter. The drive went 91 yards in ten plays.

On the ensuing drive by the Bulldogs, Wofford’s Brian Kemp came up with a key pass break-up to force a punt. However the Terriers were limited to just one first down on their next drive. On the punt, the Bulldogs fumbled the return and it was recovered by Ronald Flott at the 26-yard line. Josh Collier capitalized on the turnover with a one-yard run for the touchdown. The Terriers took a 21-7 lead with 14:41 in the fourth quarter.

Following the touchdown, the Bulldogs drove into Wofford territory with a key fourth-down conversion. Ryan Young had a sack of Duran Lawson for a loss of ten yards, bringing up fourth down and a punt by the Bulldogs.

The Terriers began their next drive at their own 16-yard line. Key first downs on the drive included a 27 yard gain by Jeremy Marshall and a 31-yard reception by Fenn Allen. The drive was capped by an eleven yard run by Michael Hobbs with 6:24 remaining in the game.

The Citadel was able to drive inside the Terriers’ red zone, but Seth Goldwire came up with a big stop on fourth down to prevent the Bulldogs from scoring. The Terriers got the ball back with 3:44 remaining in the game and gained one first down before punting. The clock ran out on The Citadel’s final drive as Wofford took the 28-7 win.

Next weekend the Terriers will host Gardner-Webb in a non-conference game at Gibbs Stadium. The game will begin at 1:30 pm.

Post-Game Notes


-The Terriers have started the season 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference for the first time since 2003.

-Wofford has defeated The Citadel nine straight times, dating back to 1999. Wofford has also won five straight in Charleston.

-The seven points allowed by the Terriers were the fewest this season and the fewest since posting a shutout against Chattanooga on November 11, 2006.

-Josh Collier was intercepted for only the second time this season. He also had an interception last week at Furman.

-Gary Blount had his third interception of the season, which leads the team.

-Patrick Mugan missed his first field goal attempt of the season. He is now 4-5 on the season.

-Strong safety Dan Tavani suffered a left knee injury in the second quarter and did not return to the game. More details on his injury will be made when available.
