STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern used a run in the early minutes of the second half to break open a tight game in Statesboro, Ga., for the second-straight year and the Lady Eagles held on for a 60-54 triumph over Wofford Saturday afternoon inside Hanner Fieldhouse. The contest marked the 100th on the sidelines for Terrier head coach Edgar I. Farmer Jr. He becomes just the third Wofford coach in program history to reach the milestone.

Georgia Southern erased a one-point halftime deficit by scoring the second session’s first nine points, including the first seven points by 2006-07 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Carolyn Whitney over a three-minute stretch to claim a 37-29 advantage. Wofford fought back to close the score to within four, 39-35, which was capped by two free throws from junior Summer Nichols.

The Lady Eagles then rattled off a 14-4 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Ashley Rivens and preseason All-Southern Conference selection Tiffany Brown, to earn a 14-point cushion, 53-39, with 9:12 remaining. Over the next five-and-a-half minutes, the Terriers outscored Georgia Southern 12-2 to trim the gap to four, 55-51, at the under four-minute timeout at 3:45.

Senior Kelsi Koenig’s second 3-pointer of the half at 1:42 cut it to three, 57-54, but Whitney buried another triple at the other end with :23 seconds to play to close the scoring.

Wofford raced out to a 7-0 lead, as junior Liz Miller, and sophomores Kathlyn Varno and Kelly Dwyer all hit shots covering the first four minutes. Dwyer added an and-one foul shot after her running jumper in the lane. The Lady Eagles would not get on the board until the 15:29 mark when Christa Waterman netted a jumper, which kick-started a 10-2 spurt which put Georgia Southern (8-8, 4-1 SoCon) on top for the first time, 10-9.

The two teams continued to battle back and forth throughout the opening stanza with neither team taking more than a one-point lead until Brown drilled a 3-pointer at 5:44 to give the Lady Eagles a 19-17 advantage with 5:44 to play in the half. After Koenig tied it again with a layup at 5:26, GSU built a four-point edge, 23-19, behind a free throw by Chequilla Jessie and triple from Jamie Navarro.

Wofford (9-6, 2-2 SoCon) rallied back to tie the score again on a pair of Koenig charity tosses and a layup by Miller with 3:02 showing on the clock. The Terriers continued to pour in the points offensively and pushed their lead to as high as five, 28-23, when Miller nailed a trey with two minutes left. Rivens answered right back with a 3-pointer and Brown hit a layup with under a minute remaining to knot the score at 28-28 for the fourth tie of the half.

Miller gave Wofford a one-point, 29-28, halftime lead when she raced to the other end and was fouled with 1.4 seconds to play. She converted one of the two free throws for the slim margin.

Brown led all players with 20 points, while Whitney added 10. Shawnda Atwood finished as the Lady Eagles’ leader in rebounds (nine), assists (four) and steals (four).

Miller and Koenig paced the Terriers with 14 points apiece. Freshman Mahagony Williams gave Wofford a trio in double figures with her 10-point effort.

The Terriers held a slim 47-43 edge on rebounds and were led by a career-high nine from Dwyer. Varno pulled down eight and Koenig had seven.

Wofford will return to action at 7 p.m. Monday when it travels to Charleston, S.C., to face College of Charleston inside John Kresse Arena.
