Wofford drops hard-fought game to Chattanooga

Box Score Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Wofford offset the fifth double-double of the season by Chattanooga's Alex Anderson by playing a hard-fought 40 minute contest as the Terriers lost, 74-49, to the visiting Lady Mocs Monday evening inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C.

Anderson, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year and four-time Player of the Week during this season, tallied game-high totals of 24 points and a season-high 16 rebounds in leading the Lady Mocs to the win. Wofford (9-9, 2-5 SoCon) made her work for her tallies, however, as she attempted 19 field goals and had three turnovers in 28 minutes before being removed with the rest of the Chattanooga starters.

Senior Kelsi Koenig and junior Liz Miller paced the Terriers with 12 points apiece, while Koenig's seven boards were one shy of freshman Mahagony Williams' team-high eight. Seven of the eight caroms came on the defensive glass for Williams.

The Lady Mocs placed two others in double figures, including 14 points from Jenaya Wade-Fray behind three 3-pointers and 12 points via Shanara Hollinquest. Chattanooga (16-3, 8-0 SoCon) shot 42.9 percent as a team to extend their overall winning streak to 12 games and 11 straight in league contests, dating back to last season.

Wofford battled hard throughout the entire game, despite falling behind early 7-2 on a 7-0 run. The Lady Moc lead grew to as high as 13, 29-16, in the first half on a jumper by Anderson at 2:13 but the Terriers outscored Chattanooga 5-2 over the remainder of the stanza to close within 10, 31-21, at the intermission.

A Brooke Hand 3-pointer on the Lady Mocs' opening possession of the second half pushed the margin back to 13 at 34-21. Over the next six minutes, Wofford clawed its way back on a pair of layups from Koenig, another by junior Laura Depko and triples via Miller and sophomore Natalie Gramblin to trim the deficit to eight, 44-36, with 13:23 remaining.

Chattanooga then turned up its defensive intensity and virtually shutdown the Wofford offense by mounting a 30-13 spurt to close the game. The final 13 points were scored by Miller, with eight, and Varno with five.

Anderson moves into fourth place on the school's all-time list for rebounds and fifth for scoring with her effort tonight.

Wofford will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it travels to Davidson, N.C., to face the Davidson Wildcats. Chattanooga will return home and welcome College of Charleston for a 5 p.m. Saturday tip.
