Box Score Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Wofford played an even first half before host Davidson pulled away in the second half for a 70-58 triumph in the second of a three-game road swing for the Terriers Saturday afternoon inside Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C. The Terriers were without the services of junior Kate Dempsey, who missed the first game of her career, and sophomore Kelly Dwyer, who was not in the lineup for only the second time in her career.

The Wildcats opened the game on fire, using a pair of 3-pointers from Honna Housley plus a layup and triple from preseason All-Southern Conference pick Katie Hamilton to take a 15-7 lead just over four minutes into the start of the contest. Wofford battled back on four points from junior Liz Miller, including a contested runner in the lane at 12:26, and a layup from sophomore Kathlyn Varno on an assist from freshman Ashley Kroker to pull within four, 19-15, at 11:33.

A corner 3-pointer by Miller gave the Terriers their first lead of the tilt, 22-21, at 9:30. Wofford (9-10, 2-6 SoCon) pushed its lead to four, 25-21, on a jumper by junior Summer Nichols and 1-of-2 free throws from sophomore Natalie Gramblin at 8:16. She then converted one more for a 26-23 lead at 7:54 to cap a 13-4 Terrier spurt.

The lead swelled to five on two instances, the last at 30-25, on a backcourt steal and coast-to-coast layup by junior Laura Depko, who was making her first start of the campaign and first since against Montreat Dec. 8, 2006, at 4:55. Housley then hit her third triple of the half to bring Davidson (12-7, 6-2 SoCon) within two and began a personal seven-point run which put the Wildcats back on top. She scored the hosts final seven points of the stanza before senior Kelsi Koenig hit a pair of charity tosses with 29.8 seconds left to knot the halftime score at 32-32.

The second half opened with Davidson netting 11 of the first 13 points through the first four-and-a-half-minutes. Following a Mahagony Williams bucket at 15:26, the Wildcats then turned to Julia Paquette for its next five points as they opened a 48-40 advantage despite a 3-pointer in the corner from sophomore Kristin Bradley.

Davidson then used four-straight tallies from Kelly Gassie, while Gramblin drained a 3-pointer at 10:47, for an 11-point, 54-43 edge as the teams passed the 10 minute mark. Field goals by Depko, Varno and a pair from Miller kept Wofford within 10, 62-52, with 3:57 to play. Miller’s final layup in the run came after she stole a backcourt pass and raced to the other end uncontested. It would be the last Terrier field goal until a jumper in the paint by Williams with just under a minute remaining.

Varno finished as the team’s leading scorer for the first time this season with 13 points on 5-of-8 from the field. The baker’s dozen of points is one shy of her career-best performance, earlier this season against Bethune-Cookman.

Miller chipped in 12 and grabbed a career-best nine rebounds, including seven on the defensive glass. Koenig added seven points and eight boards, while Gramblin contributed seven and Nichols poured in six before going down with a knee injury at the 16:28 mark of the second half.

Mercedes Robinson paced all players with a double-double outing of 16 points and 15 rebounds. All 15 of her caroms came defensively. Housley was shutout in the second half, scoring 13 points, while Gassie registered 12 to give Davidson a trio in double figures. The Wildcats shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field in the second half.

Wofford will continue its three-game road swing with a 5 p.m. Monday tilt at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. The Wildcats will host Furman at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
