Wofford volleyball falls to Chattanooga in five

CHATTANOOGA, TN-   The Wofford women’s volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday at Chattanooga falling in five sets 3-2. The Mocs took the match  25-17, 20-25, 27-25, 23-25 and 15-8.
The Terriers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but were unable to sustain it. Chattanooga (9-11, 4-2 SoCon) responded with a nine point run to take a 12-6 advantage and never looked back taking the opening set.
Wofford (11-9, 1-4) and Chattanooga battled back and forth for the first part of set two. Tied at nine, the Terriers had kills by Shanna Hughes and Liz Sheets followed by a Chattanooga error to gain a 12-9 edge. Wofford would never trail again and tied the match score at one apiece.
In the third set, both teams played to a dead heat until the Mocs went on an extended run to take a 19-14 advantage. However, the Terriers would battle back and even the set at 19. Chattanooga would then have two set points, leading 24-22, wiped away on kills by Hughes and Sheets. The Mocs then won three of the next four points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Wofford would even things up in the 4th set. Trailing 17-10, Wofford stormed back to tie the score at 20. The Terriers then took the set off a service ace by Sarah Palmer and an attacking error by Chattanooga.
In the fifth and deciding set Wofford jumped out quick to a 3 point lead but were unable to hold it. Chattanooga, leading 8-6, took seven of the next nine points to win the match.
Anna Gustafson led the Terrier attack with seven kills on 18 attacks resulting in a .278 hitting percentage. Stacy Byrd reached double digits in kills with 13 while Hughes had a match high 20 kills. Joanna Suddath chipped in four kills to go along with 40 assists.
Brittany Thompson set a new career high and school record in digs with 43 to lead the Terrier defensive efforts. Carolyn Rivers, Hughes, Palmer, and Suddath also reached double digits in digs for the Terriers.
Four Chattanooga players reached double digits in kills with Courtney Barnes leading the way with 16. NCAA career digs leader Laura Newberry added to her record with 53 digs to pace the Mocs defense.
Wofford returns to action Sunday against the Southern Conference leader Samford in Birmingham, Ala. at 3 p.m.
