SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford volleyball team picked up a key Southern Conference win on Saturday afternoon sweeping the Eagles of Georgia Southern 3-0. The Terriers dropped the Eagles on scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-22.
Wofford (13-12, 3-7 SoCon) jumped on the Eagles right out of the gate scoring the opening six points. Georgia Southern was unable to respond as the Terriers extended the lead out to 15-5. Following two Georgia Southern Kills (12-13, 6-5 SoCon), Wofford responded with three of their own to put the set out of reach.
The opening of set two was similar to that of set one with the Terriers streaking out to a lead of 7-2. Georgia Southern would cut the Wofford lead to four at 10-6; however that would be as close as they got as two extended Terrier runs put the set out of reach.
Set three would be close throughout with neither team able to create an early edge. Leading 11-9, Wofford strung together three multi-point runs to give them a 19-15 advantage. Georgia Southern would fight back and get within one at 23-22, but the Terriers picked up the next two points to take the match.
Joanna Suddath led the Terrier offense hitting .667 with five kills on six attacks committing only one error, while adding 29 assists.
Stacy Byrd added 12 kills for the Terriers while
Shanna Hughes had a match high 12 kills.
Bethany Sanford led the Eagle offense with 12 kills, while Hannah Nelson and Cristin Haines added 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Wofford returns to action Sunday against Davidson at 2 p.m.
