DAVIDSON, N.C.- Needing a win to keep their conference tournament hopes alive, the Wofford volleyball team swept the Davidson Wildcats 3-0 on the road in Davidson, N.C. on Friday night. Wofford took down the Wildcats by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-23.
In the opening set Wofford (16-16, 6-11 SoCon) raced out to a quick advantage taking a 6-2 lead on the Wildcats. Paced by three Lindsey Richardson kills, the Terriers extended their lead in the middle of the set to 16-8. Davidson (12-18, 7-10 SoCon) got within seven at 21-14 but the Terriers finished off their quick start to take a one set lead in the match.
Picking up where they left off in set one the Terriers jumped out to a quick lead. Richardson continued to have the hot hand for the Terriers, as she knocked down three kills early on. Wofford would gain an advantage as big as 17-10 but the wildcats came clawing back pulling within one at 17-16 after scoring six consecutive points. Following a Terrier timeout Wofford pushed the lead back to four at 22-18 and eventually finished off the set on a Davidson error. Through two sets, Richardson hit .500 with eight kills on 12 attacks and just two errors.
Davidson responded in set three jumping out quick on the Terriers. Davidson led for the entire set by at least three points until the Terriers came barking back. Trailing 20-17, Wofford scored two straight to close within one and eventually knotted the score at 23 on a Richardson Kill. A Shanna Hughes kill gave the Terriers a match point at 24-23 which Wofford won off a Davidson error.
Lindsey Richardson led the Terrier offense hitting .478 for the match earning a match high 14 kills on just 23 attacks while committing just three errors. Hughes also hit .381 for Wofford tallying ten kills on 21 attacks. Joanna Suddath chipped in four kills to go along with her 34 assists.
Hughes, Suddath and Brittany Thompson all reached double digits in digs to help anchor the Wofford defense with Thompson leading the way with 14. Wofford held Davidson to a .090 hitting percentage for the match.
Madison Benedict led the Wildcat offense with six kills and Jennifer Chamblee led the defense with a match high 16 digs.
Wofford returns to action tomorrow night in Statesboro, Ga. as they take on Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.
*Wofford needs to beat Georgia Southern and hope SoCon rival Furman beats Davidson to claim a spot in the conference tournament. The top four teams in each division are given a berth into the tournament.
