Box Score Box Score

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Wofford freshman Mahagony Williams had her second-straight solid outing, but the Terriers could not contain the post presence of Chattanooga’s Shanara Hollinquest as the sophomore carried the Lady Mocs to a 85-63 victory Monday evening inside The McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Williams, who scored a career-best 16 points, and Hollinquest opened the game by trading a pair of baskets each. Following a record-breaking 3-pointer by Brooke Hand giving Chattanooga (23-3, 15-0 SoCon) an 8-4 lead, sophomore Natalie Gramblin and junior Laura Depko each hit shots knotting the score once more at 8 apiece before Hollinquest put UTC back on top by a deuce with 15:30 to play.

Wofford continued to stay even with the league leaders as junior Liz Miller fed Williams for an open layup at 14:13 tying the score again at 12-12. The Lady Mocs then rattled off five-straight points, including Hand’s second triple, but a countering trey by freshman Maddie Helms brought the Terriers within two, 17-15, at 11:36.

Gramblin then provided Wofford (9-16, 2-12 SoCon) with its first lead, 20-19, on a top of the key 3-pointer at 9:34. Chattanooga jumped back in front when LaCondra Mason and Alex Anderson hit back-to-back baseline jumpers for a 23-19 edge.

Following a corner 3-pointer from sophomore Kristin Bradley, marking the seventh-straight game in which she has registered a triple, the Lady Mocs reeled off 11-straight points over the next two minutes, including four from Kristen Spann, to take a 36-25 advantage to the under-four minute timeout at 3:53.

Junior Kate Dempsey halted the spurt with a hook shot in the lane, but Hollinquest continued to dominate on the opposite end. She registered nine-straight UTC points, which was only interrupted by a trey from freshman Ashley Kroker at 3:00. A pair of free throws by Amy Mohr at 1:01 was the final scoring of the half as Chattanooga entered the intermission with a 45-30 lead.

Williams then scored 10 of the team’s opening 14 points of the second half, including consecutive old fashioned three-point plays as Wofford trimmed the deficit to 11, 55-44, with 14 minutes to play in the frame. However, by the time Bradley drilled her second trey of the game at 6:36, the Lady Mocs had tallied 17 more points to increase their lead to 72-53 on an Anderson jumper in the lane.

A three-point play by Gramblin at 4:22 helped cut into the lead again, but Miller’s jumper at 3:08 would prove to be the final Terrier field goal. Wofford tallied its final five points on the foul line, where it shot 10-of-11 (90.9 percent) for the second time this season above 90.0 percent. Anelia Murray scored Chattanooga’s final four points for the final margin.

In addition to Williams’ career high, Gramblin also reached double figures with 13 points. Sophomore Kathlyn Varno added eight points, while Miller, Bradley and Depko each contributed six points. Williams was also the team’s top rebounder with seven boards.

Hollinquest finished with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Jenaya Wade-Fray chipped in 13 and Anderson posted 12. Hollinquest grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double effort as Chattanooga extended its national-best winning streak to 18 games.

The Terriers will return to the court at 2 p.m. Saturday when they will face Davidson inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Lady Mocs will play next at the same time, but on the road in Charleston, S.C., to face College of Charleston.
