GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kemena Brooks scored 20 second half points to lead host UNC Greensboro to a 66-63 Southern Conference victory over visiting Wofford Thursday night inside Fleming Gym in Greensboro, N.C.
Both teams opened the first half by sharing the lead and Wofford took an 8-7 advantage on a short jumper by freshman Mahagony Williams. Following her bucket, however, the Spartans rattled off eight-straight points for a 15-8 edge with 11:34 to play in the half.
Junior Laura Dekpo then brought the Terriers within one with a pair of 3-pointers, while Wofford (9-19, 2-15 SoCon) remained scoreless until Brooks hit a jumper with 6:14 remaining. Brittany Frazier then gave UNCG a 19-17 lead before a pair of free throws and layup by Williams put Wofford back on top, 21-19.
Ashley Mullins hit a top-of-the-key triple with 1:36 showing on the clock as UNC Greensboro (6-22, 4-13 SoCon) reclaimed the lead one final time in the half, 22-21. However, sophomore Natalie Gramblin hit 1-of-2 free throws and a mid-range jumper with :52 seconds left as the teams entered the locker rooms tied at 24-24.
The second half opened with the Spartans putting the ball back into the hands of Brooks, as she hit a 3-pointer and added another field goal for their first five points of the half. Wofford, though, fed the ball to Williams and let the freshman take over down-low. Williams scored six points, including four-straight and junior Kate Dempsey chipped in another basket near the elbow for a 36-33 lead.
Brooks then scored 10-straight UNC Greensboro points, including back-to-back triples, to help the Spartans claim a 41-36 advantage with 12:15 to play. Megan Chamberlain made the margin seven, 43-36, before Depko swiped a back-court steal and raced down the other end to halt the surge at 11:02.
The rim remained open for UNCG as Ashley Ling nailed a 3-pointer at 9:15, sandwiched by a pair of buckets from Mullins as the hosts built a 50-41 lead. Gramblin drilled a trey at 7:32 to trim the deficit to six, 52-46, but Brooks answered with her fourth triple of the half 15 seconds later. Foul shots allowed UNC Greensboro to push its lead to 10, 60-50, before sophomore Kelly Dwyer hit a jumper at 4:59.
Senior Kelsi Koenig hit a pair of free throws and Williams added another layup as Wofford trimmed the gap to five, 61-56. Two layups by Gramblin helped the Terriers pull within three and Ling stepped to the line with 3.7 seconds to play. She missed both and Dwyer’s running 3-pointer from near half court just missed as time expired for the final score.
Brooks finished with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-23 shooting, including knocking down half of her eight 3-pointers. She was the only UNCG player in double figures, while Jasmine Dixon hauled in a team-high nine rebounds.
Williams posted her third double-double in the last five games with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The 19 points are one shy of her career-best effort, set in the last game Monday against Appalachian State. Gramblin tallied 15 to match her career high.
Wofford will close the regular season with a 2 p.m. Saturday contest at Elon in Elon, N.C., before entering the Southern Conference Tournament next week in North Charleston, S.C., as the No. 10 seed.
