Baseball Falls 8-7 To Presbyterian

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 8-7 by Presbyterian College on Wednesday afternoon at Russell C. King Field. The Blue Hose scored two runs on a homer by Robert Anders in the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie.

Wofford is now 15-8 on the season and 1-2 in the Southern Conference, while Presbyterian improves to 7-13 on the season. The Terriers were led Michael Gilmartin with two hits and two runs scored, while starter Jordan Mickleberry had six strikeouts. Wofford out-hit Presbyterian twelve to eight.

The Terriers were able to take the lead in the second inning when a single from Josh McKinney scored Keith Munns from third base. A single by Emre Caglayan drove in Kyle Behrendt from third for a 2-0 lead.

Presbyterian got one run back with a solo home run by William Bolchoz in the third. Kyle Craven reached on a Wofford error, which allowed two runs to score and the Blue Hose had a 3-2 lead. Wofford responded in the bottom of the third when Kyle Behrendt hit a triple to right center, which scored two runs for a 4-3 advantage.

In the top of the fifth inning, Kyle Craven hit a sacrifice fly to score a run. A double by Steven Henry drove in two runs gave Presbyterian a 6-4 lead. Wofford was able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jake Williams as able to score on an error. Mo Seay hit a double, which allowed Michael Gilmartin to cross the plate and tie the game at 6-6.

After a scoreless seventh inning, Presbyterian took the lead when Robert Anders hit a two-run homer over the left center wall to take an 8-6 lead. In the Wofford half of the eighth, a double by Keith Munns scored Neil Robinette from first base for an 8-7 score.

The Blue Hose got one hit in the ninth and left one on base. The first two Wofford batters in the ninth struck out. Jake Williams hit a single and stole second, but a fly ball ended the game.

Wofford left twelve runners on base, while Presbyterian stranded eight runners. The three errors by the Terriers tied for the most committed this season. Wofford was held without a home run for the ninth time this season.

The game was the first between Wofford and Presbyterian since 1995, the Terriers final year as an NCAA Division II member. Wofford leads the series 59-40. The two teams will meet again in Clinton on April 16.

Wofford will head to Davidson for a three-game series beginning on Friday evening. After a two-game series at top-ranked Arizona State on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Terriers return home on April 4 for a three-game series against The Citadel.
