Baseball Takes Doubleheader From Niagara

SPARTANBURG, SC – The Wofford College baseball team took both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon from Niagara at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers won the first game 4-0 with pitcher Ben Austin throwing eight strikeouts in the complete game. In game two, pitcher Scott Summers had six strikeouts in the 7-1 victory.

Wofford is 8-2 on the season, while Niagara is now 4-3. On the day, Sterling Dye had four hits, while Keith Munns had two hits and three RBIs. Both Wofford pitchers threw complete games, the first of the season for the Terriers.

In game one, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. Emre Caglayan led off the inning with a single, which was followed by a single by Sterling Dye. Michael Gilmartin hit a single to left field which brought home Caglayan. Shane Kirkley walked, leaving the bases loaded for Mo Seay. Seay was walked, scoring Dye. With the bases still juiced, Ryan Toniolo walked, which scored Michael Gilmartin. The inning ended with three Terriers still on base and a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Michael Gilmartin grounded out, but he was able to bring in Emre Caglayan from third base to take a 4-0 lead. Niagara left two men on base in the fifth and six innings. In the top of the seventh, Ben Austin struck out the first batter. Andrew McDonald and Tim Alberts had back-to-back singles, then Harrison Harber walked to load the bases. Ben Austin struck out the next two batters to get the complete game shutout.

In the second game of the afternoon, Wofford took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Sterling Dye led things off with a double. Shane Kirkley was able to drive in Dye.

For the Terriers in the bottom of the third inning, Michael Gilmartin walked, which was followed by a single by Mo Seay. Keith Munns then hit a three-run homer to give the Terriers a 4-0 lead. Wofford added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sterling Dye singled and Jake Williams was able to score.

For the Purple Eagles in the top of the sixth inning, the first three batters reached base. Chris Leendertse grounded into a double play, but it allowed one run to score. In the bottom of the sixth, the Terriers added a couple runs on doubles from Jake Williams and Michael Gilmartin. Niagara went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, giving the Terriers the 7-1 win.

The Terriers will complete the series against Niagara with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm on Sunday. On Monday night, Wofford will host Quinnipiac at 7:00 pm.
