Baseball Defeated 3-2 At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 3-2 by UNC Greensboro on Friday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Terriers, who out-hit the Spartans nine to eight, scored two runs in the top of the seventh.

Wofford is now 19-14 on the season and 4-6 in the Southern Conference, while UNC Greensboro is 20-12 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Neil Robinette with two hits and a RBI, while Sterling Dye and Keith Munns both had two hits as well. Scott Summers went 5.1 innings with four strikeouts in the loss.

For Wofford in the first, Michael Gilmartin singled. The Spartans had two hits in the second inning and left both runners on base. In the top of the fourth, Gilmartin was hit by a pitch and Jake Williams hit a single, but both runners were stranded.

In the bottom of the fourth, a double by Pedro Leon scored two runs as the Spartans took a 2-0 lead. UNC Greensboro added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning Greg Feltes hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Ray Quinones.

The Terriers got on the board in the top of the seventh inning. Keith Munns led off the inning with a double. A single by Neil Robinette scored Munns and Robinette moved to second on an error. Josh McKinney singled to left field to score Robinette and make it a 3-2 game. Sterling Dye added a double in the inning, but the Terriers left two runners on base.

In the top of the eighth, Keith Munns singled but a double-play ended the inning for the Terriers. With two out in the ninth, Sterling Dye singled and stole second, but the Terriers did not score and were defeated 3-2.

The Terriers stranded two runners in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, the Bulldogs went three-up and three-down. Wofford left one on base in the ninth. UNC Asheville opened the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Kevin Mattison hit a double, but both were left on base as Wofford took the 7-3 victory.

Wofford starter Scott Summers went 5.1 innings with eight hits allowed, three runs and four strikeouts and is now 5-3 on the season. John Cornely went 2.1 innings with no hits and two strikeouts. Pete Noordsy entered the game in the eighth inning and struck out one.

For UNC Greensboro, starter Greg Martin went 6.1 innings with seven hits allowed and two runs and two strikeouts. Wes McCall threw 0.2 innings and Rob Gilliam picked up the save in 2.0 innings of work with two strikeouts.

The Terriers will continue the three-game series at UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm. The next home game at Russell C. King Field will be Tuesday, April 15 against UNC Asheville at 7:00 pm.
