Baseball Defeated 16-9 At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 16-9 by UNC Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans hit five home runs on the day and had a 13-3 lead after the fourth inning.

Wofford is now 19-15 on the season and 4-7 in the Southern Conference, while UNC Greensboro is 21-12 overall and 7-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Kyle Behrendt who was 3-for-4 on the day with a home run and Michael Gilmartin with three hits and three RBIs. Wofford left five runners on base.

The Terriers got off to a good start, with Sterling Dye leading opening the game with a single and Kyle Behrendt hitting a double. A single by Michael Gilmartin scored both runners for a 2-0 lead. The lead was short lived as the Spartans responded in the bottom of the first. A home run by Pedro Leon drove in three runs as UNCG took a 5-2 lead.

The Spartans added to the lead in the second inning as Greg Feltes hit an RBI single and Ricky Orton hit a three-run homer to take a 9-2 lead. Wofford got one run back in the top of the third when Kyle Behrendt hit a solo homer to right center to make it 9-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, home runs by Matt Gaski and Sean Snell were part of four more runs scored by the Spartans to take a 13-3 lead.

Wofford responded in the top of the fifth. Josh McKinney and Kyle Behrendt singled to open the inning. Michael Gilmartin singled to drive in one run, while a double by Shane Kirkley added another run. Michael Gilmartin scored on a wild pitch and then a triple by Jake Williams scored Kirkley. A single by Keith Munns gave the Terriers five runs on six hits in the inning to cut the lead to 13-8.

Sterling Dye scored on a balk in the top of the sixth for the Terriers to make it a 13-9 game. However the Spartans added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on two hits, including a triple by Pedro Leon. A solo home run by Ray Quinones in the bottom of the seventh gave the Spartans the 16-9 final margin of victory.

Wofford starter Ben Austin went 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and 13 runs on 11 hits. Reid McElveen threw 2.1 innings with two hits, two runs and two strikeouts. Drew Sheridan went an inning with one hit and one run with a strikeout, while Ryan Conway pitched the final inning with no hits and a strikeout.

For UNC Greensboro, starter Matt Gibbs threw 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and eight runs on nine hits. James White gave up one hit, while Matt Bjorkstrom went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and one run allowed. Blake Hassebrock went 0.1 innings and Wes McCall got the save by pitching the final 3.0 innings with one hit and one strikeout.

The Terriers will complete the three-game series at UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The next home game at Russell C. King Field will be Tuesday, April 15 against UNC Asheville at 7:00 pm.
