GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford College baseball team lost 9-6 to UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans swept the three game conference series with the Terriers.
Wofford is now 19-16 on the season and 4-8 in the Southern Conference, while UNC Greensboro is 22-12 overall and 8-4 in the conference. The Terriers had eight players record hits, led by Shane Kirkley and Jake Williams each with a home run and two hits.
The Spartans opened the game with a run in the first inning when Matt Gaski hit a sacrifice fly to score Corey Overholtzer. Wofford tied the game in the top of the second inning with a solo home run by Jake Williams. The Terriers took the lead when Neil Robinette scored on an error to make it a 2-1 game.
Wofford added to the lead in the top of the third inning. Jake Williams doubled and was driven in with a single by Keith Munns. A sacrifice fly by Emre Caglayan scored Munns and the Terriers had a 4-1 lead.
UNCG got one run back in the bottom of the third when a single by Tim Carrier scored Matt Gaski for a 4-2 game. The Terriers got a double from Kyle Behrendt in the top of the fourth and he was brought home by a two-run shot to left field by Shane Kirkley for a 6-3 advantage.
The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless, as both teams left two runners on base. In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans loaded the bases with one out. Sean Snell was hit by a pitch to score one run. A single by Pedro Leon scored two runs and the game was tied at 6-6.
In the top of the eighth for Wofford, Sterling Dye singled but was left on base. In the Spartans half of the inning, a double by Tim Carrier scored two runs. A double by Sean Snell scored Carrier and the Spartans took a 9-6 lead. Wofford had one hit in the ninth, but did not score and UNCG took the victory.
Wofford starter Tom Dolinak threw 6.1 innings with ten hits and six runs allowed. Pete Noordsy went 0.2 innings with one hit allowed and Chip Hunt went 0.2 with two hits, three runs and a strikeout. John Cornely got the final out in the game.
For UNC Greensboro, starter Greg Smith went 3.2 innings with nine hits, six runs and a strikeout. Matt Bjorkstrom was in for one out and Warren Slack went 1.1 innings with one hit and two strikeouts. James White got two outs in the sixth inning and Rob Gilliam went the final 3.0 innings with two hits allowed and one strikeout.
The Terriers will be at Russell C. King Field on Tuesday, April 15 against UNC Asheville at 7:00 pm. On Wednesday, April 16, Wofford will play at Presbyterian College in a game that was added to the schedule.
