Baseball Falls 6-2 To The Citadel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College baseball team was defeated 6-2 by The Citadel on Saturday night at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers had a 2-0 lead after the fourth inning, but a five-run fifth inning gave the Bulldogs the lead that they would not give up.

Wofford is now 17-12 on the season and 3-4 in the Southern Conference, while The Citadel is also 17-12 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Neil Robinette with three hits in four at-bats, while Keith Munns and Emre Caglayan had RBIs.

The Terriers led things off in the bottom of the first with a single from Sterling Dye. He stole second base, then a single by Keith Munns up the middle scored Dye for a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, both teams went three-up and three-down. For Wofford in the fourth inning, Neil Robinette doubled with two out. Emre Caglayan reached on an error, which allowed Robinette to score for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, The Citadel led off with a single by Kyle Jordan and a double by Brad Felder. Chris Swauger then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score one run. Bryan Altman then hit a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 3-2 lead. After walking Chris McGuiness, Richard Jones hit a double to drive in a run. Two errors by the Terriers late in the inning allowed another run to score and The Citadel had a 5-2 lead.

For the Bulldogs in the sixth, a sacrifice fly by Sonny Meade added a run for a 6-2 lead. Wofford left two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth and a double play ended the seventh for the Terriers. In the middle of the eighth inning, a light rain began to fall. Jake Williams had a double in the eighth, but was left on base.

Heading into the ninth inning, The Citadel loaded the bases with two out but they were unable to score. Sterling Dye hit a single with two outs for the Terriers in the ninth, but Wofford was unable to comeback.

For Wofford, starting pitcher Scott Summers went 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and six runs on eight hits. Pete Noordsy went the final 3.0 innings with three strikeouts, three hits and no runs allowed.

The Bulldogs starting pitcher Matt Crim threw 5.2 innings with five strikeouts, six hits and two runs allowed. Raymond Copenhaver went 2.1 innings with one strikeout and one hit, while Matt Reifsnider pitched the ninth inning and allowed one hit with one strikeout.

Wofford left nine men on base, while The Citadel stranded eleven runners. The Terriers had three stolen bases to the Bulldogs one.

The Terriers and Bulldogs will play two nine-inning games on Sunday beginning at 1:00 pm to complete the three-game series.
