RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Wofford women's soccer team survived a furious offensive attack by host North Carolina State only to surrender the game's only goal in the first overtime to drop a 1-0 decision to the host Wolfpack Friday evening in Raleigh, N.C.
The Terriers, who opened their 15th season overall and 10th under head coach
Amy Kiah with tonight's contest, started the game with three shots in the first period. However, NC State (1-0) would shut down the Wofford attack the rest of the game and keep the Terriers from attempting another shot following senior
Mary Rea's header at 33:58.
Freshmen
Rachael Blackburn, playing in her hometown, and Brentwood, Tenn., native
Anne Phillips registered the other two shots for Wofford (0-1).
North Carolina State would overcome the early aggressive start by the Terriers by posting six shots of its own before halftime. The Wolfpack continued their offensive push with another 14 attempts during the second 45 minutes; however, Wofford goalkeeper
Katie McChesney kept the hosts off the scoreboard with nine second half saves, including three consecutive stops in the 80th minute.
The two teams entered the extra frame scoreless before NC State's Lindsay Vera sent a couple shots towards the cage. Her first attempt sailed high with McChesney tallying a save on the second shot.
Vera then turned her attention to helping her teammates when she was credited with an assist on Kara Baldy's game-winning goal at 96:05. Tami Krzeszewski also picked up an assist on the score.
McChesney, also playing in her hometown, finished the contest matching her career high with 11 saves, a total she reached twice during her freshman campaign a year ago. She played the entire 96:05, extending her streak to 1938:53 consecutive minutes in net for the Terriers.
Vera led all players with six shots, including four on goal. Paige Dugal, Jess Herrmann and Meredith Parrilla registered three attempts apiece for the Pack.
The two teams played to a 1-0 overtime score for the second-straight meeting, following NC State's single goal triumph during the 1999 match.
A number of Terriers stepped onto the field for the first time as collegians. In addition to Blackburn and Phillips, fellow rookies and Raleigh-area products
Sydney Reed and
Maggie McLaughlin earned starts.
